Lateral move? I know back in the day it wouldn't haven been considered this, but is it now?

Yeah, moving within the Big East is weird to me. I know Michigan really wanted Cooley before they went with Howard. Did Georgetown just whip him with cash?

Even though georgetown has the better history, I’d have to think providence was a better job at current

There’s zero chance the old school, conservative GU admin will play the NIL game. It’s a dead end program moving forward.

I’d rather be at Providence but I’m guessing GU is offering money they can’t match

Georgetown was paying Patrick Ewin a top 11 salary, I imagine his salary is huge

Very surprising move. Could see it if he’s going to a Big Ten or ACC program but this feels like a poor career move

Perhaps. But it's not the GU admin that will "play the NIL game". It's the boosters. I suspect many of them were in school at the time Georgetown basketball was at its pinnacle. That may lead to a longing to return to those days. And for such a "conservative" admin, they have never been afraid to allow the basketball program to be comprised of almost exclusively black kids...many from rough inner-city backgrounds...for nearly 4 decades. Hell, I had friends who in the late 80s'/90's thought Georgetown was essentially an HBCU. That's how little the basketball program was reflective of the student body at large and prestige.

Right now, Providence is a better job. But Georgetown has much greater potential. The beltway area has long been a hotbed of great talent, as has Virginia as a whole. It is probably also a bit easier to sell an inner-city kid on attending a private university in DC than it is in Providence, RI.

A bit of a surprising move to see Cooley leave his hometown for a fellow Big East program. Especially one he has been better than for several years now. But I guess Cooley is either searching for huge payday and/or sees the potential of what Georgetown can become again.

This is a fair point. Overall though I think the geographic footprint element in college basketball recruiting has become incredibly overrated. Between the portal (Providence’s best player was a Kentucky transfer from Chicago) and kids going all over the country to different prep schools I’m just not sure how much it matters anymore

I don't know what Providence's situation is in terms of admin or booster support, but he has been there a while, and has only gone beyond the first weekend of the tournament once. Maybe he knows that he has taken them as far as he can.

He's also still relatively young in his early 50s, so now is a decent time to get paid and kind of reset his career, even if it looks like a lateral move now.
