quote:I agree with the rule for any other race, but it does make it odd for the Daytona 500 when you have pre-race races that determine starting order. What I don't like is that the rule only applies to this race if you finish in the top 2 in normal qualifying.
These rules are just dumb and don't make sense

The worst part about it is Martin Truex was in the wreck with him yesterday and doesn't have to go to the back of the 500. He's using a backup car, if he wins Duel #2, he'll start 3rd Sunday.
Again, NASCAR has some asinine rules. I'm a casual fan, so understanding how they make some of their decisions is just beyond my knowledge.

NASCAR marches to the beat of their own drum for sure

Me too.

Why even qualify for the Daytona 500, if it's qualifying for the duels?

Huh?

The qualifying session for the Daytona 500 only sets the first row.
Then they take the odd # qualifiers and race them in Duel #1 and the even # qualifiers and race them in Duel #2. The Duel #1 results determine the inside starting grid (pos 3-43) and the Duel #2 determines the outside starting grid (pos 4-42)

quote:Truex is in a backup car, but didn't have to go to the rear of the field. Since Dale Jr. finished in the top 2 in normal qualifying, which only determines the 2 front row starters, he had to go to the rear. Truex is qualifying through the Duels so he's exempt from this rule.
Huh?
Hence, the backup car rule only applies if you qualify in the top 2 in normal qualifying.

So, anyone who wrecks their car in practice before the duels, that didn't qualify for front row, can still possibly start 3rd. Yet the 1st and 2nd qualifiers don't, in Jr.'s case. This is just so dumb. He was punished harsher than Truex because he happened to qualify for the front row.

Yup. Thankfully the only time this comes into play is the Daytona 500.

It's the only time this could ever come into play. And those NASCAR idiots probably won't address it, ever.

The only good thing is that if you're not starting up front at Daytona, it's better to start at the rear. IMO, after the field starts to get spread out, he'll begin to make his move through the field.

Can someone explain this race and the meaning to me.
I just started really following NASCAR and am watching but don't really know what I'm watching.
Thanks.
P.S. Talk to me like I'm a kindergartener on the subject.

Qualifying sets up the order of the duels
The duels set up where you start in the 500

How many races are there this afternoon?
And is Dale the only driver that doesn't matter?
Also, why have the qualifying and "polls" if this is the determining factor?
Sorry for all the questions, but thanks for answering.

Sweet! Thanks. Got it now. (more than I did anyway)

So Kurt Busch just won the Pole for the 500.
Atleast I got Harvick to root for starting in 5th.
I really hope this isn't a sign of the same old crap from Jr. He gets a decent run, makes it up to the top quarter of the field, then fades off for a mid pack finish. He's done that way to much in the past few years. Get to 5th or 6th, then fade back to finish somewhere between 20th and 25th.
