He's a good QB who had an average year last year.
and an absolutely horrible year in 2006
also let's not forget big ben has rarely been asked to really be a passer. they run a major play action offense.
when the steelers rely on him being a big passer, they don't do as well (like 2007)

under gruden
this is how fricking crazy al davis is
he essentially traded gruden for 1 reason: gruden ran the west coast offense (and like you said, it was run very well). davis wanted a vertical offense, gruden wasn't a pussy (which is why davis can't hire good coaches. he wants coaches who will do what he says) and said no. so gruden went to tampa bay and the raiders essentially have become a college team

LuckyLee, are you really that stupid? Gannon was under Gruden as SFP said. That team is completely gone now. The Raiders had no OL, no leadership, and no quality coaching. This is what has hurt them and JR. All the QBs struggled for that reason. It's easier to establish a running game with a shitty OL of power guys than a passing game. Thus why the running backs do well.
Oakland basically drafted and signed a bunch of physical freaks for their OL. That's fine for run blocking, but bad for pass blocking if that is all you look at. Pass blocking requires more thinking and intelligence.

al davis would rather lose with a vertical passing game (under a coach he can control) than win with a horizontal passing game

in total different, and much smarter, system....with tim brown, Jerry Rice, and pre-head case Jerry Porter as targets.

absolutely. Controled passing games are for pussies.

eli? frick no.
Peyton? good chance, if he is allowed to change the Davis-esque play calls.

i meant p
with that OL, i doubt p would do very well

but he really doesn't need a great O-Line with his quick hitting plays....my answer was assuming a complete overhaul of the OAK scheme. In the current scheme, Peyton does not lead them to the playoffs.

i mean current scheme with the same restrictions that JR would have

BIG co-sign.

On the flip side: how much was Elways salary at the time compared to Russells?
That is true.
But when you give 1 guy so much guaranteed money, wouldn't that suggest to actually give him a little more time to develop?
I think all QBs should be give at LEAST 3 years starting with an actual offense that can remotely compete before being written off.

Yeah the staff is entirely different, but I'm just saying that it is possible to win and have great QB in Oakland with Al Davis. It happened this decade.
I can already hear the excuses if JR gets a 2nd shot with another team. "He was totally ruined by the Raiders."

Last year with how bad that division was, yes.
Would Peyton have a 77 passer rating playing for the Raiders? frick no.

it shouldn't be too hard to win the job over JR

his passing rating wouldn't be that great though without his top 3 targets, no running game, and a piss poor oline
