Most of us who grew up in the 80s/90s had probably used the word 10,000 times in derogatory fashion before we really even understood what homosexuality was

The idea that its place in male American lexicon is a genuine product of homophobia is idiotic

That's great but how many of us were saying it on an MLB broadcast?

To be fair, he wasn't saying it on one either. Well, not intentionally. He thought he was still on break and not live.

It's a frickin' honest mistake. Nothing more.

You asked specifically about the homophobia reference, I responded

Most likely not intentional but he definitely dropped it on an MLB broadcast.

It was an honestly dumb mistake. I mean who drops edgelord humor with a mic strapped to them? Like cmon

Fwiw personally I would have just suspended him for a while, not fire him.

Bill Burr had a pretty funny bit on one of his specials where he talks about that word and it's usage in the male american lexicon. It's basically interchangeable with calling someone a pussy, douchebag, etc. However, it doesn't sound like Brennaman was using it that way when he somewhere the "F*g capital of the world." No that it would have mattered how he used it. He knew he was done the minute he found out his mic was on.

Who took over for Thom after he was pulled during the middle of the Red's broadcast?

Well clearly he didn't mean to say it on air. I don't think anyone believes otherwise. But I think it was also incredibly irresponsible to say that word in the booth at all because he was clearly speaking in the presence of colleagues when he said it. That's a pretty cut and dry fireable offense at any job in America if your superiors find out.

You don't know very many superiors. It's fireable of the RIGHT superiors, or more likely, the RIGHT inferiors find out. People most likely not in on the conversation and just have 2nd or 3rd hand knowledge of it.

Here's another question....

Would the announcer (or another announcer) have been equally as suspended or fired had they said something about a Honkey on air?

Oh god we’re already at the honkey defense? surely you’ve got some better moves to use before stooping to that

what? If I used the word f*g or any other word like it, at work, I would be fired immediately if it was reported.
I don't care who heard it or reported or who it was reported to. I'd be gone.

If someone used cracker or honkey on air, yes, they would most likely be fired/suspended. Not sure what difference that makes. I think we all should be smart enough to know what to say and not to say while at work or really in any setting amongst other people. There are plenty of things I'll say to my friends in private conversation that would get me fired if I said the same things at work.

He's an above average broadcaster and I'm bummed this happened to him.

The one silver lining is I feel like I had really bad luck in gambling with games that he called. Like at least 4 or 5 Cardinals upsets in Seattle.

Which is exactly what I said. Or meant, anyways.

That being said, I wouldn't exactly advocate for people going around their workplace saying f*g or anything else like it for that matter.

I think it's absolutely stupid that people get offended by words like this, especially when clearly no harm is meant, but at the same time I don't go out of my way to offend people, either. If that makes sense.

Sort of like I've told my wife (or she's told me) about some things... "Well, I think it's dumb, but I won't do it because you don't want me to."

I mean, I can maybe see the opinion that firing this guy is a bit much, but how the HELL is the word in question NOT a homophobic slur?

Do better.

Because middle class straight married white men aren’t offended. Therefore, it’s objectively stupid because I don’t understand why anyone is allowed to have another opinion.
