I think it certainly had to do with trying to get a slip stream, then maybe not realizing how slow he was going.
Getting a slip stream while he, Hamilton, was downshifting.
Yeah, he was trying to draft him...
Get real dude. Read what you are typing.

Well, he never gave up the position initially.

I am guessing at what was going on. I don't think Lewis nor Max were trying to collide with each other. Nothing but risk for both drivers.

He did though.
Can't give up a spot only to immediately take it back.

So he has to wait for Lewis' distended butthole to calm down or something? How long is long enough? That's bullshite.

2008 Lewis Hamilton agrees with you.
Like most FIA stuff the advantage is decided in the moment. Can't let someone pass on the corner only to have DRS and have the advantage to overtake down the straight. That's just a rule.

Two options
1. Lewis has no idea what's going on and decides to follow a slow moving car. A first in racing history.
2. Lewis knows exactly what's happening and wants to wait until after the detection zone.
Obviously it's #2. But I don't know what the rules are. No one has ever declined to pass someone before in a race like that.
Agree with all this. Whatever. Just give Lewis a 5 second penalty and let’s go to Abu Dhabi.

I've been watching this shite for 34 years. Let's just say it lacks consistency.
All I know is there were some iffy calls in this race, and they all went Hamilton's way.

Other than Max admittedly excessively slowing and Hamilton not avoiding I'm not sure what else could have gone against him. And if he had no idea Max was letting him past not sure what you want to catch him on.
In FP3 he didn't speed through double yellows and he was reprimanded for the Maz incident. So those two were handled as they should have been.
Definitely lacks consistency. I really do think some things may change next year with consistent stewards.

You act like he may not have known he was supposed to retake the position. That's absurd.

Which is why I ask after every race for professional stewards (and grid girls).
It’s clear that the stewards for this particular race were in so far over their heads that Masi took matters into his own hands early on.

BTW, just wanted to

A mishap on lap 1 could take out half the field. There's nowhere to escape on most of this track.
There's no way we get through the race tomorrow without a major incident, possibly a decisive one.

Max just got a 10 second penalty for the braking...doesn't affect result

Hope he dumps Ham in turn one next week.

If no one told him why would he expect Max to give it back

A penalty that does nothing. Guess this doesn't play into the pro-Merc FIA conspiracy.

Of course they told him. Every team is aware of every decision that is made at the time it's made. Any claim to the contrary is bullshite.
"Oh, gee, was I supposed to pass him?" Yeah, right.

Maybe you older guys can answer this but why was Hamilton on hards just as fast if not faster thanMax was on mediums? Seemed like all week both cars were pretty evenly matched and max was potentially even faster if he doesn’t crash in qualifying. Just don’t really understand why he wasn’t able to pull away a little bit early on.
