I could only imagine the concussions and amount of CTE he had.
My first thought. He had to of had multiple concussions with his style. Sad if a CTE suicide claimed another victim.

I recently watched that again on ESPN2. Apparently, he somehow became friends with McCarty years later.

Yes he was…. We all just saw him… crazy. As a lifelong Wings fan, he was a true enemy.. but he got his beatdown….

That is up there in my favorite sports moments. McCarty is cool and hilarious. I’ve hung out with him several times.
That Detroit/Av’s back in the day was bascisallly the only reason I ever played hockey. Those were must watch games in the late 90’s and early 00’s.

I feel it needs to be addressed that it's really unbelievable that Darren McCarty outlived him. Dude was looking rough years back. He's cleaned up recently, but he was looking like the Butterfly singer for a while after he retired.

It might not be a stretch to say that that decade or so (mid-90s to early 2000s) Red Wings/Avs rivalry was the most intense rivalry in the history of North American professional sports.

Obviously there are some franchises that are “always” rivals (Sox-Yanks, Packers-Bears, Lakers-Celtics, Habs-Leafs, etc.), but Avs-Wings back in the day was absolute madness, lunacy and violence. Lemieux played a huge part in that.
