I just saw a clip of Deacon Jones walking off the field with "Deacon" on his back

Was this allowed back in the day?

Sounds like in the 60's it was allowed. LA rams were NFL right?

Can't tell if this is serious or sarcastic. If serious, :mindblown:

In Asia you introduce yourself by your family name first then your given name.

With the names today the NFL would lose fans, and thus ratings and thus sponsors

Correct! Yao Ming had "Ming" on the back of his jersey his first year.

Didn't Hakeem Olajuwon wear "Akeem" on the back of his jersey at UofH?

No for real.
Ichiros last name is Ichiro, Yao Mings last name is Yao, Hideki Matsui's last name is Hideki, ect....

Crazy right?

It's their last name in a sense that they say it last, not the way we think of last names. Ichiro = given name, Suzuki = family name. You introduce yourself family name first. Over there John Smith would introduce himself something along the lines of "I'm of the Smith family, my name is John."

The best was in 1976 when Ted Turner decided to nickname pitcher Andy Messerschmidt "Channel" and put it on the back of his jersey (#17)to promote his brand new local TV station - WTBS.
