and so is the city of Atlanta - possibly the most awful big city sports town (representing all major sports) in America. I'd probably have to give anyone living there from elsewhere a pass on my "rule." If you're from there, though, you're unfortunately stuck having to get behind that awfulness.

frick that. giving an exception because why? other people dont like the teams?

I see you obviously fall under the last category of my point there.

I grew up in AZ and when I was little we only had the Suns and I hated them during the 80s. I was a Celtics fan instead. When I moved to L.A. and got Lakers season tickets I switched to the dark side and became a Lakers fan and have been ever since then.

I also grew up a Red Sox fan and will always be one, I have never liked the D-backs, I was just too old by the time they got here.

When I was little I was a Cowboys fan because we had no team here. When the Cardinals got here I went to a lot of the games and I liked them but also was still a Cowboys fan because they played here every year and were always on TV. I am pretty much over the Cowboys and now claim the Cardinals.

I grew up a Sun Devil Baseball and Football fan and I graduated from there but I started to love LSU football in the mid 90s.

So here are my teams:

NBA: Lakers
NFL: Cardinals
MLB: Red Sox
NCAA Football: LSU and ASU
NCAA Baseball: ASU

Geography is of course going to play a role. If you go to enough games, and enjoy it, you'll like the team. However, it shouldn't force you to like them just because you are there. Negative experiences could lead you to the other side.

I agree that it's lame, bordering on pathetic, yes.

Agreed. I could NEVER like the Suns....they are way too soft. I liked them for 2 years when Barkley was here because he brought toughness but other than that I have always loathed them. I just cannot pull for them no matter what even though I have lived 23 of my 33 years in Arizona.

So if you went to a Saints game, the first game you ever went to there. You sit next to some jackass the entire time screaming and cussing, said jackass spills a beer on you, you get your wallet stolen, your car is hit, your wife is rapped, your child is killed, or the standium blows up.

I don't think you're going back.

The decade thing was more about younger people growing up as NBA fans.

Can I support them? Yeah, I have no ill will towards the Hornets. As long as they don't play my team I don't care if they win/lose.

That's cool. Who is your team, by the way?

I have a bit of exposure to Miami. Both are bad as far as big league sports towns. Atlanta's worse.

Atlanta's full of transplants. They get a pass living there for the reasons I've gone into on here, if they came from somewhere where they already developed legit allegiances to other pro sports teams.

People from there or with no prior allegiances, are stuck with the suck that is Atlanta pro sports fandom. They don't get a pass - but at least I sort of feel for them (but not really - especially Falcons fans).

Which is what makes you one of the shallowest fans. You don't actually like the team or the players. You support both, but if either left then you could careless. If CP3 got sent to..the Cavs then no one here would give a rats arse about him. Where as, people who follow teams because they actually enjoy the team/players probably wouldn't care that LBJ went to Miami.

i still think that if you move somewhere that is not a previous rival, you should automatically adopt the new city's teams as AT LEAST your second favorites. i don't know if im in the minority in believing that or not, but if i had to move to detroit tomorrow ( ), i would literally become a pistons, lions, tigers, and redwings fan.

No, I can't say I disagree with that. It's why I'd have a hard time in Atlanta (at least football wise).
