You are arguing about this exactly like a woman would. You should stop watching sports. You clearly weren't raised right by your father, who likely wasn't in the picture.

I followed the Celtics growing up, hoping they'd get good again, but then I took a dump on all my Celtics gear as soon as I heard that the Hornets were moving to New Orleans. Why? Because I'm a man. I'll never wear Celtics gear again unless I'm in a movie playing a Celtics fan or if I have a child playing for the Celtics, which would never happen because I would never raise such a wuss like your dad did.

shite like this is part of the reason why I never respond to 480's posts, ever. That's GARBAGE.

That's like saying, "I grew up a Yankees fan because my Dutch ancestors founded the first dairy farm in the south Bronx, and my family has been there ever since, and my uncle actually played in their farm system, but since my name is Blaine, I became a Red Sox fan because their hat has a B on it--you know, for 'Blaine.'"

Gay.

That would be like me moving to Boston and declaring them as my favorite team.

I would get season tickets to the Red Sox and just cheer against them for 81 straight games.

ETA: Not really. I don't want to support those figs and sit in their piece of shite stadium that many times.

Well, since my Pelicans would be in the American League West, I'd still go to all Red Sox games wearing my sea green and chocolate brown Pelicans hat and be officially neutral, rooting for or against the Red Sox depending on their standings in the Wild Card race.

This is how men live their lives. The objections to our self-evident truths, which are psychic property of real men everywhere, are some of the unfortunate manifestations of pussification of America.

I catch heat all the time about being a Yankees fan from south Louisiana.... What I try to explain to people is when my grandfather was in the army and stationed in Washington dc, he spent his weekend passes going to NY with his buddy to catch Yankees games... He passed his love of the Yankees to my dad... Therefore that's who I grew up rooting for... But no... All people see is a girl rooting for the "winning" team...

I would buy Boston season ticket if I lived there... I would bring batteries and show the entire game.

the "i watched them on tv all the time growing up" argument is weak.

i used to watch the braves and was a huge braves fan until i was about 7. then i realized that it was pretty stupid to root for them because of that. I still followed them until David Justice and Fred McGriff retired but wouldn't root for them against the Stros. plus that would mean every kid growing up in a casual sports household is gonna grow up to be a Celtics/Lakers fan, because their dad only watches the NBA during the finals.

at some point u can't just keep blindly rooting for a team because they are on ur tv. u come to the realization that they were on TV because they were winning, and thats the only real reason you have to root for them.

i have buddies that text me when the lakers are beating the hornets all kinds of dumb shite like "posterized" when kobe dunks on Okafor. all it makes me think is "haha what is this guy trying to prove?" i can see his logic "kobe is awesome, i'm a fan of kobe, that makes me awesome." but really, ur just lame for rooting for the lakers when you've never been to California and you were born and raised in south louisiana.

+1

The fact that they show them on tv all the time should make you hate them.

I read through this entire thread because I think the topic is great. Really intersting to see what different peoples reasons are for the teams they pick.
I started a thread called "100% of your fanhood" about 5 months ago because I thought it would start the same kind of debate 100% of your fanhood.
I did this because I wish everyone had to proclaim their fanhood, and if they wanted to make an adjustment, they had to go before a board and state the reasons why (this would be absolute gold on the MSB). Lol man it would be so much more fun this way, and with modern technology (facebook, twitter, tigerdroppings) maybe its not too far away.

Teams, especially in a league such as the NBA, can completely turn over personnel wise in the span of about 5 years. What's your connection to the city of Boston when they do so?

Geography's (former or current) really the only legit connection.

Sure I agree and disagree with alot that has been said in this thread, as everyone should, but I strongly disagree with the above.

Yes this guy clearly chose a winner, the Celtics, which is the first sign of a "bandwagoner" (I really hate the term Bandwagon alltogether.) But if he invested his time in watching and rooting for the Celtics, he is a MUCH BIGGER fan than Joe from Laplace who has worn a Saints shirt twice a week for the last two years, says he has been a fan all his life, yet he can't tell you what position Aaron Brooks played.
Yeah the team has completely turned over the years, and he has been there everytime a player he has grown to love for his strenghts and hate for his weakness gets traded, a coach gets fired. Rooting for a team during all those emotional ups and downs are the most rewarding part of actually being a "true fan" of a team. The only constant is the team and the fans.

Joe from Laplace is displaying a different type of bandwagoneering. His motives are filled with chickenshit, but at least he's man enough to pick the right team. He wasn't wearing a Cowboys shirt 15 years ago. Even Joe from Laplace knows that that shite's gay.

This guy who roots for the Celtics is lame for self-evident reasons.

I mean I would never cheer for the Celtics/Lakers because I've never been a frontrunner, except for the occasion that one of my teams makes a run, ala The Saints in '09-'10. But I respect a fan that has been following a team a knows the history of them way more then I respect "Joe" for repping the "home-team" now that they are winner's. 90% sure "Joe" was not only repping another team while the Saints sucked but telling everybody how bad the Saints suck.

Most Saints 'fans' and Hornets fans here are only claiming to be fans because they are winning(Hornets taking the lakers deep in the series). If the Saints got 0-100 I doubt many of these people who still say they support the team(same with the hornets).

When Boston sucks in a few years because PP,KG,RA are all gone..and they struggle to make the playoffs then I'll be there wishing we had the big 3 again but I wont change.

Unlike you. Who is going to whore himself out to the Rockets next year after the NBA ships the hornets off. An after the Rockets fail again you'll switch come playoff time and support the next underdog who is close to you.
