Yea my fault. We still signed karl Malone and Gary Peyton in 2003, and Steve Nash in 2012. We have had multiple big time free agency hits since 1985

The Lakers are just down until Kobe stops scaring people away. Playing Robin to crazy old mean Batman isn't appealing.

This. No free agents want to deal with Kobe's especially now that he has aged & has been injury prone. The Lakers will move right back to the top destination spot for free agents once Kobe moves on. New York is a total clusterfrick with no hope in sight.

The mainstream basketball media is slow to comprehend that the NBA's operating model under David Stern is dead. This year, among others, proves that the NBA can be compelling and watchable without the Knicks and Lakers being relevant. This has drawn a lot of fans back in, myself included, who felt like the league wanted certain markets and teams to be good and perhaps stacked the deck to ensure it.

This is much bigger than ESPN. Hell, Deadspin titled their Greg Monroe article yesterday "Greg Monroe Doesn't Sign With the Knicks or Lakers." They write an article bitching about Phil Jackson or James Dolan daily, like we're supposed to care that New York City has a shitty team.

The national media are myopic and lazy. They want the stories and superstars to come to them, not have to go to Cleveland and Oakland and Oklahoma City to find them. That's why they're fighting it and are still trying to impose their tired narrative on the public.

Well yeah....they want those teams to be good. More people in NY and LA than anywhere else. More people, more ratings, more money

And the "good" storylines are just a cab ride away.

More people care to read about the Knicks/Lakers than the Bucks. It's an indisputable fact. Knicks/Lakers could go 0-82 the next 5 years and that will still be true.

Nobody cared about Golden State three years ago. If you cultivate an audience, they will come, whether they win the championship or not. Nobody cared about the Mavericks until Mark Cuban made them care. If the Bucks win 55-60 games next year but ABC still gives us Knicks/Lakers doubleheaders on Sunday, nothing will change

It won't because the NBA and their TV partners want it that way.

Think a lot of guys are also starting to consider how brutal the taxes can be in those places as well. Sure they're making an insane amount of money but you're also losing significantly more to live there. With social/electronic media guys can get endorsements anywhere now. They can hang out in NY/LA or both in the offseason and pocket a pretty big difference in the meantime.

Yes on TV. I'm not sure about the NBA itself. I think Silver wants to be his own commissioner and not Stern 2.0. The easiest way might be to ride this emerging wave of competitive balance as far as it goes and see how it goes. I recognize that a lot of people are pissed that New York and the Lakers are currently not "special," but I think a lot of other people who pull for other teams or live in other markets are starting to feel like for the first time in a long time that they have a chance and they're not just a farm team for the Lakers.

They just had their highest rated Finals in a very long time.

People don't care about markets, they care about stars

Stern actually did something towards this. Not sure what Silver has done or what you want him to do. If FA's start signing with the Lakers again it won't be because Silver ordered it.

I agree. I think the Lakers' biggest enemy is that the first time literally ever, they have another competent team in their market with an owner who's ready to go all-in.

The Jets. Before the glory days of Mark Sanchez the Jets had won 6 playoff games since Namath's super bowl. The Knicks were Jordan and Pippen's bitch in the 90's.

How'd Nash work out? How about Dwight Howard? Show me a single relevant free agent signing in the last decade.
