If you take this out of the shadows, & make it allowable if they report it, then it is less likely to be abused or used as a cover for other things.
Anything can fall under "payments for autograph." Guys wouldn't be making money from playing football, they would be making money off their image. So it's nearly impossible to control how much a guy's image is worth. Give a guy $500,000 for "autographs" and anything could fall under that. "Sign with me when the draft comes...sign with this school...you don't need to play in this game now that you are making this much money...here's your autogrpah money."
And that's not even touching how to teach these college kids how to deal with money.

Obviously players are receiving payments for their autographs already. Unless you want to believe Manziel is the first and only case of this.
I believe it's not the first case, I don't believe it's rampant across college football.

this is true but thats a damn slippery slope when you pay different players more or less based on performance
You mean treat them like every other person in this country who has a job?

because then it becomes a bidding war that would ruin college football
It doesn't ruin college football, it changes it. The problem is most people hate change and would rather pretend that amateurism still exists.
The best hs players in the country are already engaged in a bidding war, you just don't see it.

Agents and schools can't do this now? Also, not playing in games will lead to lower draft status and less money for the agents so highly unlikely that becomes a big problem.

Why is that necessary? It's their money, they can spend it as they see fit. No one else in college takes a class on "how to deal with money"

Maybe not autograph signings but players getting cash from agents, boosters, etc is rampant.

Ungrateful for being told how they have to accept compensation for a job, that destroys their bodies while others get straight cash. Yes yes they are.
It would ruin college football for people like you who still live in the fantasy world of amateur athletics.

i am very much aware of how college sports work....but it is my opinion that the way it is now is much better than what it will be if they start paying the players more than they already do. you need to look long term at this

it is really simple to just have that liberal mind set
It's a "liberal mind set" to let players performance and the market dictate the level of compensation players should receive?
I'm out.

If players are going to get paid, there should be a separate league outside of collegiate athletics. The stars would go semipro, and the student athletes would be just that. No way should there be a school branded semipro team.
Here come your best money can buy LSU Fighting Tigers! GTFO. College is for learning, not being a pro athlete.

no its a liberal mind set to just throw a bunch of money at kids who have no business having it. they are treated like kings already and given money under the table. it should stay that way.
if they want to get boat loads of money then the NFL needs to change their rules to draft them out of high school

then you also run into the problem of all the other sports wanting to get money as well when really football generates all of the revenue. it would be a shite storm of epic proportions.
college football is college football. if you want a salary, go play in canada or the arena league

He's 100% jackass and stupid for doing this, but I think he should be able to profit from his name, his image, his celebrity.
