ESPN - Re-drafting the NFL: We picked 128 foundational players across all 32 teams

What if every NFL team had a complete do-over in building its roster? What if every single player were a free agent? What if the worst team in the league had a chance to add a Super Bowl MVP at quarterback? Or one of the worst defensive teams out there was able to plop a two-time Defensive Player of the Year in the middle of its front?
Well, let's find out. We hit reset on NFL contracts and released every player to the open market. Then we gave our NFL Nation reporters the GM job, allowing them to re-draft the foundations for their teams. Here are the rules:
Every current NFL player is available, and salary caps don't matter here. But we only drafted four rounds.
In those four picks, each pretend GM had to select a quarterback, a non-QB offensive player and a defensive player. The fourth pick was a wild card, open to anything.
We used the 2020 NFL draft order, with traded picks reversed, and a snaking format.
What about the other 20 starters for each team? The rest of the roster is made up of average-level NFL talent. Our analytics team identifies that as someone such as OT Donovan Smith, edge rusher Harold Landry III or CB Malcolm Butler.
Each GM was asked to draft with intentions of winning a Super Bowl within five years. Some took a harder line, while others built a base that might still need a year or two.

Some of the picks are wild.
Teddy Bridgewater went 18th overall.
Teddy Bridgewater went 18th overall.

Out of all the ones to laugh at, that’s not the one

A player that most people arent betting on lasting more than a couple of seasons due to injury history was picked in the 1st round of a draft of the entire NFL.

The Chiefs drafted 2 RBs in the first 3 rounds.....

Who is most people?
If that were the case he wouldn’t have just gone #5 overall.
Look at the QBs taken ahead of him. That makes more sense than Bridgewater at 18 or drew lock at 15

draft grades for a fictional draft. what's next. after party for draft grades of a fictional draft? then what? training camp articles for fictional drafts.

Or just dont pick a QB in the first round. There was literally the entire NFL other than 29 players available.

"He's a great college player but, wow, he is fragile. He's a super kid and I don't wish ill will, but there's three, four or five red flags staring us all in the face saying, 'You know what? This guy's not going to be all that he's cracked up to be.'"
quote:
Breer added before listing several NFL QBs and their draft classes. “Sam Bradford in 10, Jake locker in 11, Robert Griffin in 12, Marcus Mariota in 15, Carson Wentz in 16, Deshaun Watson in 17, Josh Rosen in 18, all of them had significant injury history in college, all of them got hurt again in the pros.

Yeah the list has that issue throughout, Tua is not close to the worst example of this.
And pulling 2 quotes doesn’t mean “everyone” thinks he will only last a handful of years.

Never did I say he was the worst example. I just thought it was a funny pick that a QB that has had injury concerns his entire career and never played in the NFL before was picked 30th in a draft of all NFL players

Which again I’ll say Out of all the ones to laugh at, that’s not the one

I get Drew Brees and Tom Brady are top 3 qbs. But Brees has one year left and Brady maybe a few. How do you justify using your first round pick for that when literally you can have any pick of the entire NFL.
ETA: If you do a quick scan, the Saints won that draft by far.

The criteria was that the goal was to win the Super Bowl “in the next 5 years” so I’m guessing they figured they would go after that in year 1 and 2

The Texans managed to draft two players that they've traded away or lost in free agency over the past few seasons
