Well.... At least This won't cause any issues at all....

Organizers of the famed race, which started in 1967 for men only, told the media that they will now allow people to register in whatever category they “specify themselves to be,” according to ABC News.

“We take people at their word. We register people as they specify themselves to be,” said Tom Grilk, chief of the Boston Athletic Association. “Members of the LGBT community have had a lot to deal with over the years, and we’d rather not add to that burden.”

The announcement is a break with the recent past where no official stance on the matter was taken. In the last few years, transgender runners simply signed up and ran without the imprimatur of the group overseeing the race.

ABC notes that five men have already signed up in the women’s category for the 2018 race to be held on April 16.

Here's what I found:

quote:

The fastest overall man and woman each win $150,000. Second place for each category gets $75,000, and third takes home $40,000. The rest of the top 15 win prize money as follows:

Fourth: $25,000
Fifth: $15,000
Sixth: $12,000
Seventh: $9,000
Eighth: $7,400
Ninth: $5,700
10th: $4,200
11th: $2,600
12th: $2,100
13th: $1,800
14th: $1,700
15th: $1,500

Well shite, if I was a male marathon runner but didn't have a chance in hell to win against the men, I'd try to collect the prize money by signing up as a woman and competing.

Sorry if I have a hard time believing you could run a marathon under 2 hours and 25 minutes.

That being said, this is still a very stupid rule.

If there was nothing attached to winning other than pride then maybe it'd be not a huge deal. But with a financial prize attached to gender this will be a mess.

I'm not gonna sit here and act like any man could outrun any of those women but the top men will outpace the top women. That's why they compete separately at the Olympics.

Men's record is 2:02:57
Women's record is 2:19:59

Difference in all time best times is 17 minutes. I'm all for equality and the trans community gets a lot of heat when imo some people just see themselves differently and that's ok but with the ammount of money at stake and the genetic differences naturally given to us, this seems unfair.

Fwiw, the top woman in last year's Boston Marathon would have gotten around 20th in the men's division.

I like this.

This group of people claim women and men are the same, so we should eliminate all women's sports and eliminate Title IX.

No women's basketball. Just one team and whoever makes the team is on it.

Same with tennis, golf, track and field, swimming and soccer.

Solves all the funding issues.

That's pretty damn impressive, and a surprise to me.

I know you're being facetious but it would be funny to see people push for this, then claim sexism because obviously no women would make the teams and then the reverse push for different leagues.

That's funny now. But what happens in the future when a guy in the 15-20 men's range with no realistic chance of winning decides he wants to actually win the Boston marathon and collect first place prize money?

Whenever these stories come out, I'm always amazed at how little shame these men have to compete against the women. It's one step up from doing this:

I really hope a dude takes the women’s 150k. It’s worth it for that kind of money
