quote:3/4ths of the league is rarely on national TV so it doesn't matter.
They drive ratings for that super team's broadcast, and tank the rating for the other 3/4th of the teams whose fans know before day 1 that they have no chance to contend.
And when they are, folks don't watch, they wait for the super teams then watch.

You picked the Raptors last year?
The Raptors had the 4th highest odds to win it all at preseason
And I said

You have been able to pick the 2-4 teams that have any shot of winning before the season even starts
So looks like it was right on

Nationals were 14th and Red Sox 7th in preseason odds the last two real MLB seasons.
Blues were 10th and Capitals were 6th in preason odds the last two real NHL seasons.
So yeah thats way different than the crazy super nuts outlier being the clear #4 favorite one year Raptors winning.
Its been #1 or #2 in the NBA for 13 of the last 15

I like how teams in some of the biggest and fastest growing metropolitan areas lose their teams but Memphis, San Antonio and Cleveland survive
To be fair, San Antonio almost lost our team in the early 2000s. Before the city agreed to build the SBC Center (now the AT&T Center, I know), there were serious rumors the Spurs could relocate to Memphis, actually. But also, SA has experienced crazy rapid growth the past 20-30 years. Already the 7th largest city in the US, and almost certainly will pass Philadelphia for #6 on that list in this decade. And that's just rote city population size, not including the corridor to Austin.

Nobody watches hockey or gives a shite dude
The dodgers won this year and were the heavy favorites so my point stands

You straight up asked if it was different in any other sport.
The answer was yes and its most of them.
Sorry facts got in the way?

I dont know if you realize it, but you're proving my point.
5 or 6 teams carrying the weight for 25 others year in year out is not a great business model.
People might actually watch 2 playoff-bound teams play if making the playoff actually meant anything in the NBA.
Edit: ANY league where intentionally tanking an entire season or multiple consecutive seasons is seen as a viable and regularly employed strategy has some massive competitive balance issues.

You want a less accurate way to decide the best team in the league?
Single elimination playoffs are the worst way to decide a champion
You are going to get fluke results consistently

Insightful take. Hockey is rapidly growing through the Sun Belt and Southwest.

Unfortunately, and I honestly believe this, if the NBA tried to go to a hard lower cap and downsize then I think the Main Stream Media will pull out the racism card. Lebron and some of the players would as well. They would talk about the profits the owners make and how cutting back and putting a hard cap puts the restrictions on the players, which are majority POC. Also, cutting teams down means less players make it to NBA, which makes it harder to get into the league. Granted, I think making it harder weeds out the ones who only days 2 minutes of mop up time, but still.

Not the year they won the title. They had the 9th best odds. They were around the same last year.

Regardless, they weren't top 4 in anything I have seen. I appreciate you adding to my argument.

Agree about the problem but disagree on the solution. I think bigger incentives need to be given to players for staying with the franchise that drafted them. Not sure what that could look like at the moment.
I know this wouldn't likely fly with the players union, but maybe only make the super max contracts available for the the franchise that drafted the player. If there's a big enough swing in contractual money, players might think twice about forming these super teams. Right now, the financial gap isn't wide enough.

Yea, 9th as soon as the 2018 season ended
Before Kawhi was even traded to the Raptors
In October they were 5th
