How does this work? I know Woj is the main focus in breaking news, but do the sources get paid for covering information for him and others?

Woj got his start as Joe Dumars' mouthpiece in the media.
Also, if you can believe it, he got his reputation as the ESPN killer by moving forward with "sources" quotes and predictions, which ESPN wouldn't tolerate as much at the time.

If I was him, I would pay them with some sort of explosive device, because he seems to have them in great abundance.

Exactly. He is actually a really shitty writer when it comes to traditional storywriting, features, and analysis. He found a niche where he kisses the asses of agents and their clients, along with GMs and coaches (Dumars is his most egregious although he has a strong relationship with Calipari as well), and in return he gets a lot of info.
Of the big names, he was on very bad terms with LeBron for a long time, as well as Coach K. Not sure how he is with LeBron anymore, and being on ESPN, he has to be a lot more subtle about his shots.
