shite I don’t even see dues wearing the thigh or hip pads anymore.

I know I'm an old man screaming at clouds, but when I played low-rent sports (not anything serious) when I was younger, the coaches told us to take off all our chains, etc. because they'll get ripped off.
I'm happy they still allow players to get tackled by the hair. If you're committed, tuck it in you helmet. Otherwise, deal with the consequences.

speaking of knees, are so many playing with damaged knees that the black knee braces are a necessary protection or do they work as a protection against future damage?
Protection against future injuries. It’s supposed to protect them from when they get rolled up on, or sideswiped in the legs.

Football is becoming soccer with the shorts and fake injuries.

In the 70's people hit to maim, or at least knock players out of the game. I would have wanted extra padding in my helmet to hit Major Ogilvie at the knees.
In high school back then, we had "girdles" with slots on the sides & one in the back for those hip pads. Getting dressed was like gladiators suiting up in armor. I wore a Ridell suspension helmet until my junior year. The only padding was under the ears.
