Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that the Dodgers and Reds are nearing a trade that will send Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Wood and Kyle Farmer to Cincinnati and Homer Bailey to Los Angeles.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Dodgers will send $7 million in cash to the Reds as part of the deal, while Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic says that Homer Bailey -- who had to waive his no-trade clause -- will be released once the trade goes through. The Dodgers will reportedly be getting prospects Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray and international bonus pool money, as well. They're also freeing up some money, which naturally leads to speculation that they could lure in Bryce Harper or Corey Kluber. We will undoubtedly hear more about this as the weekend unfolds.

Joel Sherman ? @Joelsherman1

Even with the $7M shipped to #Reds, #Dodgers save about $17.5M toward 2019 luxury tax payroll here. Kemp for tax purposes is $20M, Wood/Puig approx $22M combined while Bailey ($17.5M) plus the $7M.

I could be wrong but unless those Reds prospects were anything of note, it seems Dodgers gave them up for next to nothing.

Not that they were critical pieces, just seems like they could have gotten something for what are very formidable players.

Especially if they don’t end up with Machado or Harper.

Jeter Downs has potential. He could be a 20-20 type of guy. If he has a good year in the minors this year I could see him being in the Top 75-100 prospects next year.

It looks like it was a way to clear up the OF and free up some cash while getting something in return.

Jeter Downs
quote:

Jeter Downs has been traded to the Dodgers with Homer Bailey and Josiah Gray.

Fantasy Impact: MLB Pipeline ranked Downs as the 7th best prospect for the Reds before this trade. He's only 21 and was a high round pick who scouts have mostly liked. He shouldn't be headed to the majors until 2020 or 2021.

MLB Pipeline had Gray ranked as the Reds 20th ranked prospect. Seems like a high upside guy if he can develop after only becoming a pitcher a few years ago.

This is an excellent get for the Dodgers, as Gray greatly improved his stock after making his pro debut in the Appalachian League. The 6-foot-1 righty logged a 2.58 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 59 strikeouts in 52.1 innings, showcasing a mid-90s fastball, potentially plus slider, developing changeup and solid command/control. He should head to the Midwest League this season.

This is all about unclogging the outfield for Harper. He’s gonna be a Dodger. I’m depressed about Puig leaving.

As a Reds fan I love the trade though I just hate they're all on expiring contracts. Still we add them and potentially make a deal with Cleveland we may sneak into the playoff hunt. At worst we still suck and deal them at the deadline so this is a win all around. Not to mention it'll create some excitement with the fan base and we get out of Homer's crazy contract too.
