Only a matter of time until big tech owns the rights. Broadcast TV will go the way of the radio for the next generation.

Disney agreed to pay $1.9 billion annually for Monday Night Football in 2011 — a deal that runs through 2021. That dwarfed the average $1.1 billion annual cost for Fox, $1 billion annual price tag for CBS and $960 million for NBC's Sunday Night Football.

Why would Disney pay $900 million more then Fox when fox broadcasts 4-7 games per week reaching 8 to 14 different fan bases while MNF reaches only two fan bases and is frequently not even a compelling matchup? They should be paying closer to what NBC is paying.

because Disney needs the highlights for ESPN. Imagine every show replacing their highlights with still images like the Olympics and PPV fights

ESPN has always overpaid a little for NFL rights because they needed to be a partner with the NFL. The games were only part of the equation. Everything from highlights for SportsCenter to the ability to cover the draft were staples of ESPN programming for years.

Then in 2006 they started overpaying a lot because they were even more desperate. The new TV deal moved the big primetime Monday night game to Sunday on NBC. ABC was out of the picture. Fox and CBS had the Sunday afternoon games.

The only thing left were scraps. The league-owned NFL Network was also new, and NFL wanted to broadcast games to bolster their own network. ESPN and Disney were forced to pay the NFL a fortune for those scraps. Disney was able to keep MNF branding when games were moved to ESPN, they overestimated the value of the MNF brand when it’s applied to second and third tier quality of games each week.

At the end of the day you can make all this tv money, BUT if you aint got asses in the your over priced seats and buying your 1000% increase on merchandise, food, and drinks you still gonna be hurting.

The see they are only going to be relevant for a few more years so they are trying to get as much as they can while they can.

This sounds like hyperbole but the writing is on the wall with the NBA.

Albeit the NFL has had half of the yearly Top 10 broadcasts the last 10 years, sports or entertainment... You can noticeably see a waning of interest.

Super Bowl was horrible this year, the hype wasn't there, the game and officiating were terrible. The league going all SJW didn't help but I think its more of the dishonest product, people are waking up, sports aren't that important and maybe its time to move on from our childish ways.

Pretty wild that white people slavishly gloat over any perceived bit of "good news" for an organization that supports organizations that viscerally hate white people

really "wild" man!

This is great!

Disney's worst nightmare is happening. They got into sports wanting to use the leverage to showcase their other assets to the perfect audience. Dads and young men are a target for them. Surely that would get more exposure to the theme parks and Disney's other profit centers.
Then came along BLM, kneeling issues, anthem disrespect, etc And they chose to listen and follow that moron Roger Goodell and the NFL members, instead of listening to their boss, the fans. They laughed it off at the time thinking "fans will just have to accept it, it's the NFL, what are they gonna do?" It took some time, but we, the fans, have hit them where it hurts...the bottom line. An added bonus is that their brand has taken a HUGE hit. I wouldn't knowing spend a dollar on a Disney product ever again.
I probably watched 40 + games per year for 30 years. This year I watched 3 Saints games and the Superbowl
They've been exposed, just like the NBA. I really can't imagine spending a dime on any NBA related products. They treated normal everyday paying customers like dog shite.
I took some time, but the fan's anger over cheap publicizing of irrelevant social bullshite and liberal driven agendas has beat these leagues down.
Its like a big time successful crack dealer. Last thing you want is to run out of the addictive drug for 2 months and give half of your customers time to kick the habit and focus their money on different products.
And thats what we did. We showed them that they don't own us, we own them.

Good job men! Keep it up

I would be more than fine with Disney keeping their nose out of the NFL altogether. The days of Howie and Dany Don and MNF rockin' the nation are so long gone. Everything has a ceiling and the consumer will eventually set it for the NFL.

Local networks in this country run under the umbrella of about 3 major entities who are task with negotiating with cable and satellite providers and basically holding viewers hostage. They are now in the process of driving prices up with internet streaming services as well.
