It used to be but all the big time programs thought they were above it

This is a good game but to answer your question...it used to be better only because the top teams that almost made the real NCAA tournament never turned down the NIT. This year most top teams that barely missed it, turned it down.

Tell me how the NIT rustled your jimmies, I’m curious

It became mega arse when they took it out of Madison Square Garden and the top teams invited started opting out. Who the hell wants to end the season in Indianapolis playing at Hinkle Fieldhouse?

It's actually older than the NCAA tournament, and for a long time, was just as prestigious, or more.
The whole thing used to be played at MSG, so it was a huge deal for East Coast schools.
In 1970, Al McGuire passed up an NCAA bid for the NIT, because they were going to ship Marquette out of the Midwest regional.

When I was a kid Southern Mississippi won the NIT. I believe it was in 1987. It felt like a big deal at the time…

When SLU won the NIT it was a bigger deal than the NCAA tournament. Its why I claim a NC, mainly cause I'm bitter.

There was a time that turning downing an invite to the NIT was rare and players actually cared. It suffered a similar fate as the lower tier bowl games since the playoff was implemented in recent years. As more and more hype is given to the top teams, the sport suffers as a whole.

If Fox keeps the Crown Tournament going a few years it'll kill the NIT.

Like most things ESPN takes over, it sucks now.

Media consumption used to be smaller.

It's fair to do so. I know DePaul, and probably a few other schools, claim national championships for NIT wins back in the day. The NIT often had the stronger field because it had more exposure.

It used to be a consultation prize for not making the big tourney. But now it’s not even close to what it once was.

At one time the only way to get into the NCAA tournament was to win your conference tournament. So yeah, a lot of teams still wanted to play ball.

The NCAA basketball tournament consisted of about 24 teams in 1965. The NCAA tournament was much more selective then. There were outstanding teams that weren’t selected and therefore the NIT was a better tournament than it is today.

And UCLA cheated better than everyone else, so they killed their 12-24 team fields.
I'm sure a lot of teams did not want to play against a known dirty program like the Bruins when they were clean.
