Did Nick Anderson’s 4 miss free throws cause them to lose the finals to Houston?

I always hear how those missed free throws cost the Magic the title that year. If he made those free throws, I think that would have been the only win in the series. I could be wrong but the Magic were young going against an experienced Rockets team who Hakim abused Shaq every game. I still feel bad for Nick where he was terrified to shoot free throws going forward.

It killed their confidence. Not saying they would have won if he had made then, but its a completely different series if he does.

I liken it to game 1 of the last Cavs/Warriors series with the whole JR Smith fiasco. The Cavs had played a great game, and could have sealed it with a last shot. Instead the whole team, which was already an underdog, saw the fire go out for the rest of the series.

That is a great comparison. I rather lose the way Cleveland did then to watch Nick Anderson miss four straight free throws. I cringe watching it every time praying he makes one of them. As a 9 year old, that ruined the beginning part of my summer. I was supposed to be happy getting out of school with the whole summer ahead. I just knew when they knocked off the bulls, I was going to see Shaq and Penny win the title.

Sux for your 9-yr-old summer, but mine was paradise.

It's one of the great what ifs because of what that first win would accomplish for their confidence, I mean that team blew a 20-point lead and should have won that game, they win that game, that confidence sustains. It wouldn't be a sweep IMO but they probably win that series in some fashion. Thing is, they probably still should have won that game had Nick Anderson took that delay of game per Penny in the Magic Moment doc so the Magic D would anticipate what was coming and Penny perform on Kenny Smith accordingly but what happened happened, probably the best team not to win a title that team was GREAT.

That Rockets team was a 6-seed. They turned it on in the playoffs. Hakeem abused league MVP-David Robinson and did the same to Shaq.

Hakeem is vastly underrated. He was graceful and hard-nosed all in one. If Nick makes those free throws, they take Game 1. They don’t extinguish the Rockets fire though. Houston could take the adversity. Orlando was too young and inexperienced to go through that situation.

I agree with this, I create a ton of top 5 all-time NBA greats lists and never include Hakeem in that and that's a credit to the longevity and parity of the league but also reflects how hard it is for maybe the greatest athlete to play this game at a sustained level next to Greek Freak, Wilt, MJ, LeBron, and Kareem to reach this level when you consider so so much. One could obviously argue for Hakeem to replace at least maybe one player in the top five but that's difficult, I don't disagree with the notion of him replacing LeBron, Hakeem had better intangibles, was greater in the paint, didn't choke in the playoff series he participated in, better teammate, incredibly versatile in his game to the point he could play some outside, and certainly a better FT shooter than LeBron. I mean at least Hakeem didn't create a super team like LeBron did to help him win titles, dude was too strongminded, persisted, and ultimately prevailed with a team of role players against the best both conferences could offer. Anyone with a brain would rather start a team with Akeem Abdul Olajuwon over LeBron James unless they enjoy constant choke jobs.

It was poetic justice in all honesty.

The second foul wasn't a foul, watch the replay, it's all ball...Anderson got stripped as he was falling to the ground, it was all ball.

They called the foul on Ellie who cleanly stripped the ball and the stupid announcer says, he's just stabbing at it.

The Magic were up 3 with 56 seconds and the ball and then missed their next two shot attempts...and then missed 4 FTs...and then let Houston tie it up with 5 seconds left and everyone in the building knowing they need a 3...and then Dennis Scott gets his own court 3-point attempt blocked with 1.6 seconds left.

In the last 56 seconds the Magic missed 3 FGs and 4 FTs to end the game.

And then let the Rockets score the winning basket in OT with 5 seconds left.

That Magic team was like the new kid with the flashy new car who rock and rolls throughout the season but when one thing goes wrong, they lose their swagger.

It's not a secret they then got swept.

No. The only thing that would have changed is the Magic would have lost the series in a gentlemen’s sweep instead of a clean sweep. The Magic had a stronger 1-2 punch but the Rockets were significantly better from 3-8. They were simply the better team. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that guys like Robert Horry, Sam Cassell, and Mario Elie continues to have a lot of team success after leaving the Rockets. Those guys were consummate winners who knew how to win in the postseason.

Idk, but he was never the same player after that. He had a couple seasons after that we’re he was a horrific FT shooter; even had to go to a sports psychologist.

Big Magic fan. Have watched most games since 92-93.

They’d have still lost the series 4-1. Hakeem was schooling Shaq at that point and putting on a clinic. Shaq held his own offensively.

The D and Mario Elie essentially put the clamps down.

Houston could score 1-5. Magic has maybe 2-3 players that could shoot beyond 6ft.

Dennis Scott will always be my all time favorite Magic player. Man was deadly on kick outs.

Still remember watching that game

I want to say all 7 of Kenny Smith's 3 pointers came in the second half including the one to tie it up at the end of regulation
