Not just that. I'm sure they will find something.

This move is good for the game and business of golf IMHO ... By keeping golf equipment in its stores, Dicks will keep golf in the forefront of the fringe golfers mind. If they would have phased out the golf end of the business - the game would have become an afterthought to that fringe player.

In the long run this helps these PGA pros that were let go today - There will be more AND BETTER opportunities for them in the future because of this decision.

Half of these will get out the business. That doesn't help IMO.

So, I take it you don't go into Dicks by the mall and get gear from Cashman?

I like our Dicks, Cashman has some great gear and better stock then the Edwin Watts in town…from Titleist to Scotty Cameron. I have bought my Ping Driver and fair wood from there because they were unloading them for an incredible price.

But, for the stuff that needs to be fitted, then I am heading to the Golf Exchange.

I understand. They were cutting PGA guys that give analysis of swings to get consumers "the right club for them" but their overhead was too high.

doesn't make sense if you work in a place where people come in looking for the cheapest club they can find

Yea that's under half the people that shop at dicks. Dicks rep is higher cost. Specially apparel.

i will add this to the discussion. I am a casual golfer. I use to play weekly, i got custom fitted years ago, i am a tall guy. Well i stopped playing, now I am getting back into it. I took some lessons a couple years back and she basically told me my clubs weren't fitted properly. So now I am getting back into playing again, and I am in the market to get fitted for new clubs. Dicks or any big box store are the last places i would go to get golf clubs. the only thing places like that are good for is ball, clothing, shoes and other apparel.

You realize big box stores are the only places that carry almost every club to try right? I send my members there to hit the clubs all the time.

Well the academy in lafayette barely has anything other than drivers and putters to test. The only other place I know of to try clubs is the golf connection, but they are charging you a fitting fee to try out clubs. there is no place in lafayette to try out a range of club brands. the driving range on amb caffery had a demo day for 2 years straight about 5 yrs ago and hasn't had any since. the only places that have demo days are a couple courses around here that are both private and only members can attend.

Sounds like some of you guys need to find a Golfsmith in your area. Best place to go for testing and club fittings. New clubs, used clubs for those that may be interested. Good prices, and all the brands you would want. I live in Augusta and go to Dicks and local golf shops when I need to, but I always check at Golfsmith in Columbia before making club purchases.

I didn't say it did. Just saying it was the only place in lafayette where you can try some clubs without paying.

Well I'm not helping, I play refurbished Ping Eye 2's. Actually all of my clubs were used off of Ebay.

Did one of ya'll actually speak to the PGA of America to get their feedback as you stated over the weekend? I'm sure they're not happy about this at all.

What serious golfer go to fricking Dick's looking for a Pro? That was a huge mistake to begin with. Just put your cheap golf clubs out and have some pimply faced kid manage that section.

Those who play or watch golf are generally a higher class of people.

Higher economic class.
And the only reason that that's the case is that it is expensive to play. And there is nothing they can do about that. Courses are expensive to construct.

Academy is now where in the same universe as Dicks when it comes to the golf section.
