i get pretty upset when people make ignorant comments about a sport they know nothing about
my filly is going to the track soon, but she won't make me rich by any means...
so am i more of an a-hole for doing something she was bred to do and not making $ off of it?

This is OT a little but what are your thoughts on putting them down. Obviously if they break a leg, you have to, but the big argument up here is that the injection is worse on the horse than using the old school bell gun. Many vets up here say it is more humane to use the gun than to inject them, although more gruesome. I have seen a couple up close get injected and it was miserable. One had a broken leg and it didn't seem that bad, but the other had an intestinal issue so they gave him the shot and walked him. Right before he died, he let out the most God awful noise and then jumped, kicked out all fours and hit the ground. That shite seemed horrible.

thank god i haven't personally seen any put down yet, but i'm not sure. i guess the gunshot could always go wrong in some way and cause the horse some awful suffering. don't they usually give a paralyzing shot before the actual euthanasia? i'm not sure...
a horse that i rode for about 8 years had to be put down a few months ago. i went to meet my friend at her house and get her on the trailer to take her to the vet school (we couldn't get a vet to come out
). I got as far away from the room as possible before they could do it.
i have another friend who had to put 2 down this year. the first one was a bigger horse and it took a little while (she said 10 seconds). the second horse was a little smaller and it was instant. he still had half a carrot in his mouth.
if it's up to me i'd choose needle because it's going to work.

Thanks for keeping this thread going. Some great info on here. I had Dialed In over AK, Nehro, and MMM in a tri key, so I am disappointed to say the least.
Hope you keep the discussion going through the final two legs. I have enjoyed it.

COMMA TO THE TOP (Bwana Charlie), who finished last of 19 after pressing the pace for the first mile, suffered a chip in his left front ankle during the race and was "doing OK" at Churchill's Barn 42 Sunday morning, according to trainer Peter Miller.
"He ate up last night and he wasn't tired after the race," Miller said. "He didn't drink any water or anything. But he's just a tick off; you can see it. On a scale of 1 to 5, he's about a 1. Not much, but he isn't quite right."
Miller said he'd schedule a surgery for his horse to remove the chip with Dr. Wayne McIlwrath of Colorado State University, one of the most respected veterinarians in the country.

PANTS ON FIRE (Jump Start) didn't suffer any fractures or chips from his ninth-place run in the Derby, but George and Lori Hall's homebred "bled enough to say it was significant" from the exertion put forth in his effort, trainer Kelly Breen said Sunday morning.
"One of the things we're working on is his immune system," Breen said. "We were staying on top of his lungs coming into this race so it's a bit of a setback to say we have to work on him. Coming off a mile-and-a-quarter race it's tough to say he's not fit now, but you have to start from the inside out and heal him up. He'll probably be going back to the track soon but he'll just be doing it nice and easy."

This is a bell gun, it don't miss. It literally fits on the horses head. I don't think I could watch that but I'm going to look for this article where a vet that I know is mentioned. He swears by the gun. He won't use it due to regs and law, but says it's way more humane.

I figured Archx3 was done. The real money is in the breeding. So really PJ should be mad at breeders for making horses breed for money. It is so horrible.

I know a little early but isnt the Super Colt due in February?
I would love to watch the bidding of that thing go on at the yearling sale.
