If I was Te'o I would have made up some story about how I honestly didn't know at the beginning but found out a bit into the "relationship" that it was a hoax. Being too ashamed to admit it to family and friends, the lie spun out of control. Apologize on camera, throw on a fake cry, and all is forgiven.
