Last year wins the cy young and is completely dominant, this year he's 3-9 with an ERA near 6. He's not hurt, he was never a power pitcher, he was never a big prospect. Was last year a fluke or is this year the fluke? He's a free agent soon, what do you pay me? Obviously even a mediocre starter gets $10m+ but the guy was a young cy young winner its quite a unique scenario.

Not that he's terrible, but last year was the fluke IMO.

this is what happens when you dont have ace stuff. you have no margin for error

Guys stopped swinging at the marginal pitches and he's getting less calls on them. Add to that, I believe he is fatiguing much faster after throwing 230 innings last year, he leaves the ball up and gets rocked.

This.

His stuff has never ace quality. Rarely does his heater hit 90 and usually hovers around 88mph.

Before last season, he was an average pitcher at best and had never been some up and scouting report stud.

That's not entirely true, he threw 200 innings in 2014 with a 2.93 ERA, wouldn't exactly call that average

Ok, yeah you're right.

However, in his two seasons before that, he had an ERA of 5.00+ in 47 games.

I'd say the way he's pitching right now is more evident of the kind of player he actually is than the previous two seasons.

I think he's somewhere in the middle, An innings eater than gives you about a 4 run ERA.

Too early to call it a fluke. Let's see how the rest of the year unfolds.

He's left his fastball up a whole lot more this season than years past.

I imagine due to him not getting the calls on the corner anymore.

That's really the only difference I'm seeing vs last year. I'll give him the rest of the year and maybe some of next. We need a bigger sample size post Cy, IMO.

His location is poor this year and he's decided he needs to throw his shitty cutter more often.

Nah, I'm pretty confident that it was a fluke

The entire season was a fluke for Houston last year.

He's walking more batters than the last two years, and giving up more fly balls that are turning into home runs. Probably a result of not keeping the ball down. His FIP is only 3.81 as well, with a BABIP against him of .340, indicating some bad luck so far this season.

I would bet that fatigue has a lot to do with it. 200 IP in 2014, then 232 plus playoffs last year. Some guys can do that year after year, but some guys' arms wear down.

Ehhh i know he didn't get "paid" paid, but $7.25M is a pretty sweet jump from $525K
