They didn't trade Brunson. Just declined to offer him when they had the chance, and he left in free agency.

Not true. They could have extended him for basically peanuts but decided to wait it out until he was a free agent.
By then he had gone on that playoff run and could command a max contract. And at that point, yeah, he was always going to the Knicks Mavs had their chance tho previously

His dad was literally hired by the Knicks to ensure he went there after they cleared cap for him. It was done prior to that playoff run.
That's why they traded for Dinwiddie in the Porzingis trade.
And Luka and 3-6 Latvia had drama. Add in injuries and deflated value and they got what they could for him.

They had to trade Porzingas because Luka didn't get along with him.
They can't force Jalen Brunson to renew no differently than Pelicans with AD. Brunson led them on then bolted to the Knicks in free agency
How is any of that on the GM?
The GM just traded Luka because the owners WANTED Luka gone. Adelson didn't want to pay Luka that record contract

He literally has the second best team in the Western Conference with a good chance to return to the finals. They will also be one of the best defensive teams.
They weren't going anywhere this year with Luka being out all the time or out of shape.

I heard an urban legend on the radio yesterday that they broke up Jim Jackson/Jason Kidd/Jamal Mashburn in the 90s because all 3 were feuding over Toni Braxton.
