I would take Mahomes throwing left handed before I’d gave Dak that kinda money

His cap number for 2024 is a whopping $59.45 million.
- He cannot be tagged next year, meaning he can become an unrestricted free agent no matter what.
- He also has a no-trade clause.
- If Dak were to leave in free agency next year, Dallas would take on $36.4 million in dead money for 2025.
Dak’s inconsistency after 2016 and struggles without Elliot played a big part in Jones over paying Elliott at start 2019 season and doing so a year early due to Elliott’s holdout. Jerry feared going into 2019 without Elliot and relying on Dak to carry team.
2016 was Dak playing completely in the system with veteran group of receivers, OL, and a highly drafted RB to make run game more like 2014 with Murray’s contract season. Initially he had little pressure as he was rookie just filling in for Romo and was drafted as a project.
2017 was more of a struggle with Elliot’s impending suspension second half of the season and Bryant showing age and cumulative injuries.
2018 was looking worse which forced Dallas to trade for Cooper mid season to have some semblance of a passing game threat.
2019 had a lot of padded stats in a contract year while the team actual got worse.
2020 with franchise tag they were struggling even before his injury and again it was the covid year.
Jerry panicked after the covid losing season when Dak got injured and due to lower cap after that season, and he just rolled over thinking he was running out of time.
I think its going to happen again. The one thing Jerry fears more than over paying Dak is his replacement doing worse than Dak does elsewhere after Jerry does his usual crappy job with QBs outside of Dak who wasn’t even drafted to start (Aikman & Romo were not his decisions).
I like Dak but at a price more consistent with being a notch or 2 above a game manager.
