"Oh STFU. This game could have gone either way, but don't try to say this BS after game 1."

Most baseball games can go either way. Tejada looked like he was in quicksand at SS all night. Pudge didn't get the bat through the strike zone until Soto was throwing the ball back to Zambrano. Carlos Lee must have been in the same quick sand as Tejada. All I'm saying is that they are very old, and old teams break down. The astros are very thin to begin with so I see the potential there for a really bad year. I'm being serious, other than your standard "since Drayton has owned the team blah blah blah" what are you excited about on this years team? What do you see that makes you think "you know what? this team can do some damage this year" I'm just curious

I am a die hard Astros fan since 1982. I only watched 1 inning last night and once the Cubs were up 2-0 I knew it was over. I knew as long as Zambrano was in they wouldn't score a run. He just owns them with his arm and his bat. I'm surprised he didn't hit a home run last night. If I was cooper I would have held Roy back a day and let Ortiz be the sacrificial lamb against Z. That way we have a chance of winning 1 out of 2.

The astros are old and slow. They have some names but those names are older and slower this year (Lee, Tejada, Pudge, Blum) and they a guy who will hit .200 in CF. The rotation is patchwork. My expectations aren't high.

What gets me are these guys that say the Astros are the second coming of the Cleveland Spiders. But when the Cubs beat them, now you think the Cubs beat the fricking '27 Yanks. Which is it?

If you are lacking in baseball history, look up the Spiders. Worst team ever.

I never said anything was impressive about the cubs win last night. The cubs had good pitching against an average lineup. The cubs played great fundamental ball. Nothing amazing, just a solid game on opening day

The story of the game was Z. It was his first Opening Day victory in five tries (though he threw well in the 2008 opener and got no decision). Here's hoping he keep his head on straight, his shoulder healthy, and his pitches down all year... and maybe we have that ace we've been dreaming of.

ESPN's Dave O'Brien and Rick Sutcliffe did their usual good job; I like Sutcliffe and since he's a former Cub, he knows a lot about the team. But I have a few words for ESPN's producers:

Hey. Guys. PSST. The 100-year thing? We know. WE KNOW. WE FREAKING KNOW. Can you guys knock it off now?

At least they waited till the sixth inning today.

How many of the Cubs 9 hits got past Miguel last night? Where did you come up with this?

ETA: I just checked the game tracker to make sure I was right on this. There was not a single Cub hit that was hit through Miguel's side of the field last night

He had an off night. He was 10-20 in the WBC for a .500 avg and slg .950. He was getting the bat through the ball pretty well there so his offense is the least of my concerns. I would like to see Hunter step up and move Pudge back in the lineup because of his speed.

He had one bad play in the mix up with Tejada. Carlos has never been known for outstanding D so as long as he hits 30 hr's and brings in a hundred again like he has done the last 6 years, i'll give him a pass in LF.

Agree, but i'll worry about this when or if it happens. Not try to pass opinions off as facts like you are doing.

Same team as last year and they had one major injury to their team which came from a fastball to the hand, not anyone breaking down.

The fact that it is the same exact team from last year with the exception of Ty Wiggington and Randy Wolf. The Astros finished the year with the second best record in baseball after the ASB so it gives Astros fans a bit of hope for that same team to come out of the gates strong this year. Our 2-7 is very good offensively and has potential to put up some runs. Our BP is very strong, same guys are back from last season, and we had one of the best statistically in all of baseball last year. We have to hope that the palyers stay healthy and preform the way they have in the past but so does every other team in baseball and if that happens I am optomistic about the way this year could go. Do I wish we were younger? Yes, but with age comes expreience and guys who have been there before. There is a lot of talent on this team and while I think we will fall short of the palyoffs, I am not writing them off as a bust afer game 1. There is so much hate on this site for the Astros and I get sick of reading it, especially because most of it is from people who don't watch the Astros and know nothing about them, yourself included. I've been a fan all my life and seen some shite teams put on the field before but i've also seen some great ones. In my experiences I would say this team is not going to be great and go deep in the playoffs but they are certainly not bad.

Z is a quality #2 starter. He has never been and will never be an ace. He's only won 16+ games once - no 20 win seasons - 8 years pitching in the Majors and only 1 year with an ERA below 3.00. harden is your best pitcher when healthy FWIW, you just can't depend on him to pitch the 200+ innings an ace is required to throw.

That was funny in the 2004 NLCS when the Cardinals fan had a sign that said that after they went up 2-0. Then after the Astros won three in a row to take a 3-2 series lead, an Astros fan had one that said, "St. Louis, now you have a problem!"

Too bad the Cardinals won the next two to make the World Series.

Any team from Houston trails in a series in basketball or baseball and it is guarenteed that someone from ESPN is going to use that line a minimum of 5 times durring the discussion of the two teams.

ETA: same exact signs could be seen all over Busch stadium durring game 7 of the 2005 playoffs just before The Astros closed that piece of shite forever on their way to the WS.

How was the atmosphere last night? I have always wanted to go to opening night at MMP. I went to the last opening day in the Astrodome and that was a lot of fun.

It was really fun. Had fan fest all day outside the stadium. Got to see the players sign autographs and hang out before they went inside. Inside the stadium was pretty packed. I think they said it was over 43k for attendance. The atmosphere for opening day is like a game 7 in the playoffs. if you get a chance next season i'd highly recomend going. We are leaving in about an hour for game 2
