Not too many people in America realize that the cricket World Cup is currently being played between 14 countries in Asia and now the teams are playing in the knock-out stage.

Moments ago India defeated Australia in a tense tense quarter final match knocking the defending champions out of the tournament and sending a billion people into a frenzy. The Australians have won the last 3 world cups 1999, 2003 and 2007. So for the first time in 12 years there will be new cricket World Champion.

India will play Pakistan in the semi-final next. As most of you know the neighboring countries are always under political turmoil and the cricket teams hate each other to the guts and have a storied rivalry lasting decades. It will be one of the most highly charged and emotional sports events ever.

p.s. If any of you notice any of your Indian IT workers not working, or if them seem distracted or better still if they called in sick today, it is because they were up all night watching the Australia game. It will happen again next Wednesday (March 30th when India play Pakistan in the semifinal

I wonder if Dhillip showed up to work today.

Cricket is more of a sport than NASCAR.

I live in England and still don't understand this sport. It's essentially baseball, but slower and more unathletic. The Pakistani and Indian people on campus go crazy for this shite though.

However, Pakistan and India cricket matches are the biggest rivalry games in all of sports. Not many others have nuclear annihilation as a backdrop thankfully.

+1 Ha, very true.

The India-Pakistan games happen or don't happen based on the state of bilateral political relations between the two countries. If diplomatic relations are suspended for any reason (and it has happened a few times the past decade), the governments refuse to let the national teams play each other. So anytime they play each other, you can rest assured the pent up hatred the two countries have for each other is brought to bear out on the cricket field.

I remember the Indian and Pakistani students on campus at LSU used to play cricket matches on Parade grounds and the CEBA parking lot across from the credit union on Nicholson Dr. extension. Does that still happen?

I recently got into watching and following cricket. I'm one of those people that can appreciate the nuances of just about any sport - NASCAR and females excluded

Comparison of cricket and baseball

Gives some good info for n00bz to either.

I actually had the score updating in the background while studying.

GO INDIA!

btw, Cricket's not too bad once you get a handle on the rules. Plus I think there's a bit more strategy to it than baseball

:ducks head:

Certainly would make for a good debate. I think the amounts of strategy in each are very comparable to each other.

In baseball, the pitcher throws multiple pitches but you have to approach each batter differently based on numerous situations.

In cricket, the bowler delivers a stock delivery, varying velocity, line and length. You do your best to get the batter out, but you have to put in position a constantly-changing field alignment.

Too much to analyze for me.

There's a thread on page 3 about CWC, didn't get too in depth though.
