Jeter led the league in hits twice and had over 200 hits 6 other times (8 times total) which helped. Hits, Home Runs, RBI, Average, are all key areas for baseball writers in ALL markets not just East Coast.
quote:no he would be the best player on most teams, if we go with this argument then Biggio on other teams would be just another good player.
Jeter on most other teams is just a very good player
quote:Iconic plays helped him, what he did during the playoffs helped him (.343/.397/.465 over 158 games) and this goes well beyond just playing in New York
but the media helped him a ton in NY.

can you provide some iconic plays that weren't blown calls. TIA.

If you believe they were blown, cool....
fact is they are what separates Jeter from Biggio (besides playoffs and world series) and in the books they are seen as a home run, an out, etc...

quote:Biggio never led the league in hits and only had 200 in 1 season... he led league in doubles (not seen as an important stat by baseball writers) and runs twice which baseball writers do enjoy
Bingo, not much different than Biggio

If I "believe" they were blown? Like I've got some kind of conspiracy theory here. Want to go back to the last page and see the pictures or should I post them again? Clearly fan interference, clearly Giambi was safe.

Look, you're not going to change my mind. If Biggio played second base for the Yankees all of those years, there's no doubt in my mind that the media would have pushed him hard and he would have been a first ballot HofF'r.
In the long run, both he and Jeter will both be in and I think they both belong, although I can see the gripe with Biggio from some.

quote:I think the "first ballot" idea is ignorant... in the end Jeter has more hits (voters love) more runs (voters love) more rbi (voters love) higher average (voters love) higher OBP (voters love) higher slugging (voters love) that separates Jeter from Biggio as well as what I discussed earlier.

if you say so, I believe they were right at the time

Fortunately for Jeter they didn't happen in the replay era.
Posted on 7/26/15 at 4:34 pm to Lsuhoohoo
well neither did a lot of things for Biggio.... imagine if we had replay all time how many iconic plays would be changed, how would stats be different, how would players be remembered.... sad really to think about some of these plays we grow up remembering as false because they didn't have replay.

Well, first ballot tends to separate the real greats from the Andre Dawsons and Ron Santos of baseball.
BTW, I'm not saying that Biggio was better than Jeter, just that they are comparable and Biggio would have been hyped much more had he been on those Yankee teams.

As I addressed already, I think it would have helped him but not push him to first ballot. He gets in on 2ns year but without the playoff heroics and iconic plays he doesn't have anything to elevate him into that first ballot status.

Do you see Michael Young as a hall of fame player?
Posted on 7/26/15 at 4:47 pm to cubsfan5150
Nope.... I mean his numbers pale im comparison to Jeter and Biggio
He doesn't have 2500 hits, 200 home runs, 500 doubles etc.... He played 14 seasons and led the league in hits twice and BA once. He had a nice career but he would have needed to extend it and continue his numbers.

Agreed, but I could see him getting in after sitting on the ballot forever or by the veterans committee.
However, if he had been 20 years younger, I think he would get in for sure.
