Two years ago, they didn't see the "huge needs" on defense and had just signed Jason David to replace what they thought was the one problem on the defense.

There were definitely huge needs on the defense, but I didnt mind the Meachem pick at the time because I wasnt in love with alot of the defensive players at the time. I wanted to go the rout of just trying to outscore teams. Guess that didnt work out to well.

I think that this year you will see why Meachem was picked.

i think he will be in a fight for a roster spot. He still doesn't run good routes, get out of his breaks, or consistently catch.

i remember most of the bar at Cooters yelling to pick Greg Olsen, which made sense as well. Hell, that means we wouldn't be short on draft picks this year after the shockey trade.

true that perhaps didn't know that the defense would go in the shitter, but i don't see how they thought the LB's or DT depth was adequate, TE was addressed, or even some more trench depth. Maybe they thought they were one piece away from winning it all and it was a WR? who knows, but that's the saints.

true.

but even if you MUST take WR why take a pure deep threat when the strength of Bress seems to be intermediate and short passes? We already had a pure burner in Devery. A guy like Anthony gonzales would make much, much more sense with the turf and accuracy of Brees.

In retrospect Eric Weddle was the pick there. Too bad we didn't see it at the time.

crabtree is a product of the system

Of course his numbers will be inflated at Texas Tech, but did u watch games? Crabtree has incredible hands and can catch in traffic (probably the most underrated skill about wr's or their hands, everybody wants to talk about speed and size). He's very productive after the catch, which has nothing to do with the system in college. Also, he's not a blazer in the speed department but hes fast enough to get open..Even if his speed isnt as great he'll be a Marques Colston..He's legit

I don't know what team you're watching but the Saints defense has been horrible ever since Payton arrived. His FA acquisitions on defense have been abyssmal. Last year was the first year he brough in some good talent: Vilma, Porter, Gay, and Ellis. Now we need them to stay healthy.

In 2006, the Saints defense was middle of the pack. AT THAT TIME (you're looking back at it three years later...), they felt that all they needed to upgrade was at CB, which is why they brought in David. They had also just released Horn, so they felt that bringing in Meachem to replace him would be the way to go.

So, AT THAT TIME, the pick made since, and it still does, in the big picture.

Route Running>Hands, Size, and Speed.

Which is why Harvin won't be the best WR in the draft.

Agreed. Well that and his injury questions and off the field issues.

Devery and Meachem= same player IMO. We should keep one of them, Lance Moore, Marques, and Arrington that would be a top shelf WR group w/o breaking the bank.

pretty ballsy assumption

those guys have 28 catches between them in 4 years

Id say Crabtree passes that as a rookie. Any takers?

it makes no "since."

2006 NFL rankings for Saints:

#1 Offense
#11 Defense

quote:

They had also just released Horn

who finished 4th in the team in receptions and had 1 TD for the year.

quote:

they felt that all they needed to upgrade was at CB,

finished 3rd in the league in team passing defense. finished 23rd in the league for rushing defense.

now what does common "since" tell you what they should have picked?

Remember Fred Thomas getting torched by Berrian in the NFC title game? Our CB's were McKenzie, Fred Thomas Jason Craft and Fakir Brown if i remember correctly. And Bellamy, Bullocks and Stoutmire at safety after Harper went down. We DESPERATELY needed a corner.

i just don't see it. If the Saints had a great track record in the draft maybe i would be more patient, but they have taken some these gems with their first pick the last 10-20 years:

Meacham
Bush - not a bust, but a dissapointment.
Will Smith - signs, but needs to stay on the field.
Johnathan Sullivan
Stallworthless
Ricky Williams - KILLED us
Turley - at least he was fun to watch
Chris Naeole - whole drafy was a waste
Alex Molden - whole draft was a waste

i hope you are right, but i just get the sense that Meachem wears his helmet on the short bus riding to practice.

We're probably going to keep five WRs, which gives us Colston, Henderson, Meachem, Moore, and Arrington.
