re: Corch Irving Meyers has some words for Tom Herman and Will Muschamp

quote:I actually thought it was telling. Texas has a little better young talent than Maryland, about equal across the board. Maryland has a second year head coach. And the game was in Austin. Yes, there is a process needed to catch up to OSU, Bama, FSU, even the next teir of LSU, AU, USC...but you dont claim an inability to compete with Maryland after having the team for a full Spring and Fall camp.
That quote by Herman is pretty benign,
Herman came off as an excuse maker. If he cant compete with the likes of mid tier teams in year one, he has MILES of ground to make up to compete with OU in the next three years.

Another thing to consider is psycho Gators fans. Nikki Meyer was getting bombarded with messages like "your father sucks why can't he fix the offense"
Nikki Meyer expressed her hatred of Gainesville. Few years later Shelley Meyer mentioned how hostile sec fans are.

Fair enough, I'd have to see the press conference or the rest of the quotes for context. Just doesn't seem that different to me than Saban talking about the process before he got Alabama rolling.

I don't believe this bull shite for a second.
Meyer resurrected that program from the dark days of Ron Zook practically overnight and won a NC in year 2, a Heisman in year 3 with arguably the most popular Florida player ever, another NC in year 4, and would've won another in year 5 if not for Alabama. The guy was a living legend at Florida in 4 years.
It's absolutely laughable that the Meyers try to act like they had it bad in Gainesville.

Punk arse quit at Florida cause he saw what was coming. Obviously the health stuff was BS. He was never planning on quitting coaching...just quitting Florida.

But you left because Saban kicked your arse a combined 63-19 in 2009 and 2010. Once Tebow left, you could see that winning at Florida wasn't going to be near as easy.
So, Tebow > Saban.
Also, this will never get old...

Really? You don't believe for a second that there is an abundance of trash in the Florida fanbase?
Ever been to Florida?

I like Florida as a state, but it has some of the strangest people in the world. It's like one big carny camp with beaches.

Meyer forgot about when he Blamed Zook for his kids acting a fool, getting arrested, etc.
Funny how when you shite talk to the media and blame others, then go out and call some one for doing it, that it will come back to make you look like the jackoff u are.

No worse than tOSU fans. They are one of worst fan bases in CFB.

A good coach can win with decent players and a bad coach and lose with highly talented players.
With that said, there is some gray area in there. If your opponents are much more talented and have more talented depth, it doesn't make it easy on a coach, if he is playing against respectable opponents.
I still remember hearing the news about Urban Meyer resigning as Florida's HC and thinking "that's perfect timing considering he was losing a lot more talent than that was projected to come in. In the middle of that season, I remember talking about how Meyer would probably have two or three down seasons (when I say down, I don't means having a losing record or anything, 8-4, at the worst 7-5). So I do think in Muschamp's case, the argument can easily be made.
As for as Tom Herman, that's his scapegoat because the Texas team he took over has decent talent.. I don't know how talented they are compared to the top teams in the Big 12, but I know they are more talented than Maryland.
Just look at the team recruiting rankings over the past several years.

Easy for him to say considering the loaded situations he stepped into at Florida and OSU.

That's a legitimate gripe though. If you come in and the players never had discipline, you do run into issues with certain players about that.
But the is not the case with Strong's Texas players.

How is Meyers Florida situation any different than Hermans Texas situation.
That team is loaded with talent. They lack leadership and coaching.

Very simple. Meyer walked in, inherited a bunch of Zook players who were talented but miscreants. Herman walked into a team that was talented but Charlie Strong purged a lot of the miscreants his first year and did his best to keep them off the team.
Schematically, Tom Herman's offense is much closer to the system and recruits put in place by Sterlin Gilbert than the Florida team Meyer took over from Zook team.
Remember, when Meyer got to Florida, the spread was a "gimmick" that small school teams had to use to compete. There was no talent pipeline of players coming in; Meyer largely had convert players. He and Tebow changed the pipeline.
At Texas, the Air Raid has been going on for decades and the 7 on 7s forever. That pipeline has been in place for a long time.
Very very different first year scenarios.
