I'm sure if someone celebrated on Butkus, he would make them pay. I have no issue with on the field justice, as long as its not overtly dirty.
Old school is fine, but times change. You can't force the old times back by being a fuddy duddy.

that's fine with me.

or you could have a tiebreaker, like SD. They have had 60 minutes to settle it, if your team loses the toss and lets the other team score on the first drive, then you deal with it.
Ties are for pussies.

First, on the celebration thing: I agree. You can outlaw excessive celebration (and like porn, you know it when you see it), but let the players police it on their own.
The reason that you don't see silly shite in rugby is that guys know that they will get the business if they do, for example.
Regarding ties, I'll bring it back to rugby. You play 80 minutes and if it's tied at the end, you accept the tie.
I contend that overtime is for pussies, because having the option of overtime encourages coaches to play for OT, which means that they play it too safe and make for more boring games.
Real men can take a tie and fight for the .5 game later on.

Hey I resemble that fuddy duddy remark. I used to get mad at my father for talking about the Brooklyn Didgers all the time. Hey dad they are not coming back Get over it. I guess I turned into him.
I admit I watched LSU Georgia on ESPN Classic from 1987 yesterday.

College OT bastardizes the game completely, its takes out an important part of the game special teams and eliminates the impact of defense. Might as well just hve them settle it with a skills competetion.
Pro OT is vastly superior. Sorry if some team you root for sucks too bad on D it can't stop one drive after a kick off.
Not saying the college OT format is perfect, but it is still better than sudden death.

I have to agree with Soph on the no OT during the regular season idea. How would you do OT in the postseason? I don't like that college basically gets rid of the impact of special teams and defense but I really don't like sudden death, either.

its pretty much the opposite of perfect.

why? because sometimes the team that loses the toss sucks too bad on defense to make a stop?

When you are trying to come up with a fair system for breaking ties and part of your argument is "too bad," you may want to reassess your argument.

well I think they should have to score a touchdown though instead of just getting to the 30 and letting their kicker finish it. Then it's a turnover on downs and the other team gets a shot...
Damn, I guess those are pretty much the NCAA rules huh?

I would change the nfl overtime rules to be like college.

For OT, I would only have it in playoff games. If you are tied at regulation, deal with it. You tied. In playoff games (not bowls, just playoff games), play an extra period. If it's still tied after that, play another extra period. After that, go to sudden death.

I would just play a complete extra period. That way, the spirit of the game isn't bastardized in any way. If need be, play full periods until it's done. Or play two 10 minute periods, and if it's still tied after those two, play ten minute periods until someone ends up with a higher score after the period is over.

Yeah, and then I changed my mind regarding sudden death. I don't think that it should ever happen.

I'll play along then. Let's have a hypothetical game between Team A and Team B. Team A and Team B both have equal possessions in regulation with each scoring on every possession. So we go to OT and Team A wins the toss and receives and, of course, wins on that possession with a FG. What did Team A's defense do that Team B's didn't other than not touch the field in OT to help win that game?

I think they made a new rule in college this year where if you start taunting or high-stepping going into the endzone then it will be a 15 yard penalty from the spot and the TD doesn't count.

Ok, but whether it is this scenario or 3-3 at the end of regulation both teams' defenses gave up the same amount of points. So telling one team "to just play defense or shut up" isn't fair when the other team's defense doesn't have to necessarily see the field.

Nope, not an NCAA rule.
