Given the new rules for transfer etc, essentially no rules at all, how long before the NCAA eliminates the 5 years to play 4 rule and lets students continue to play for as many years as they want as long as they are enrolled in school?
Seems like the next step.

Why even make them enroll in school?

Do you really think a star player wants to play 7 years in college over professional sports where the money is still ten times better with better benefits

Obviously not taking about stars who will leave early. Role players who add depth and experience and just stay in school for as long as they want.

Not just talking about football either.

Irrelevant. The NFL bound players are not even staying 4 years in college. The ones not good enough to ever sniff the NFL would not even be invited back for extra years at a college due to making room for younger players. Even now, we see all the time that clearly some veterans and even new signees are being "processed".

The ONLY way your theory would ever be applied by colleges were if the 85 total scholarship limit went away. Then it would go back to Bud Wilkinson days at Oklahoma where they needed about a half dozen buses to take the players to the games.

We aren't just talking football here. And we aren't just talking LSU.

There are plenty of great college players that just are not pros. And the smaller schools would certainly take a 6th year player that LSU didn't want any longer.

I don't think this will happen, TBH, but I do think there will be a push for it.

My idea has always been to let the players actually play 5 years. 5 to play 5. No redshirting, no extra years, no appeals, etc. You get 5 years, period. No exceptions.

The OP is being wrongly downvoted here,
as College Football in the last few years has proved to be a case where the slope actually is slippery.

In the last five years we’ve gone from most transfers having to sit out a year to be eligible at a new school, to “waivers” being handed out like candy, to “ok” you can transfer ONCE for free to now essentially complete free agency.

While they are trying to claw things back a little now with academics and degree progress requirements, that may just be another stop gap. They are also at the whim of the court system and possibly congress.

It’s not too hard to believe that at some point, the practice of limiting players to five
to complete 4 won’t be seen as violating some law.

As for the players “wanting” to stay in college, there are plenty of very good college players who aren’t cut out for the NFL. Heck, I’d bet guys like AJ McCarron and Stetson Bennett, right now, would agree to play college football for NIL money.

Thank you.

And people seem to limit the discussion to football and that’s not the case.

Look at sports like WBB. Very limited WNBA spots so why wouldn’t some of those players who won’t be pros stay in college and play as long as they want or as long as the coaches let them.

Same for baseball or softball. A middle reliever who doesn’t have a MLB future might stick around and get people out for 7-8 years. Don’t think that would help the team this year?

Same for track and field or gymnastics.

Hell forget football altogether in this discussion if you want. It’s seems to be a legitimate question with the way things are going.
