Defensive coordinator Brent Venables became the highest-paid assistant football coach in the country Wednesday when the Clemson board of trustees' compensation committee approved a contract extension that will pay him $2.5 million per year through 2026.

$2.5 million was the amount offered to Rich Rodriguez to come be the head coach at Alabama back in December 2006. Everyone made a big stink when Saban was hired for $1.5 million more.

Venables has been rumored to have some major skeletons in his closet, that would show up if a school we’re vetting him for a HC position.
