Clear something up for me.. NBA and dunks. Traveling? Walk?

I've always wondered this.
What is the rule on travel/walking when LeBron/Kobe can take the ball, take 4 steps, then dunk it without dribbling?
I see it every year and it drives me crazy.

That looked like 3 steps to me. Superstars get 3 steps, its in the NBA rule book.

I count no more than three and I'm pretty sure I saw two and a fricking ridiculous jump

so you're saying they do get the 3rd step though?
and superstars only.
that's pretty much what i thought.

This pretty much, plus alot of time it happens so quickly that its too late to call traveling by the time the refs realize it's happened.

Yes superstars get three

Thats generous saying 3 steps. I only see 2.
Posted on 6/16/10 at 2:06 pm to TigerTatorTots
Yeah, that's 2. Left foot is down on the last dribble. Right, left, dunk. 2 steps.

even if its 2 and a jump, the jump itself requires a step IMO...
I just wonder what the rule actually states.

It is yet another reason that to me, the NBA is a joke

that gif wasn't even the example I'm talking about either..I just found one close real fast to demonstrate what I meant, and it happened to be a very close example anyways.

You get 2 steps and a hop whether its a bunny hop, a jump for a dunk its all legal.

You are correct, the gif you showed is a dribble, 2 steps dunk. the 2nd step is his jump

It's true, but I never liked that rule. Same with charging. Superstars rarely get charged with charging. That plus the ability to walk/travel usually makes it easier fot them to be "superstars". But who decides if they are a superstar or not in the first place, and which comes first.
Ahhhhhh, I hate it. Just call the same rules for every player!

Traveling, 3Pt Line Distance(especially the laughable NCAA one), and Raiding NCAA, has f@cked up the game of basketball, from top to bottom.
They are better players and athletes than ever before, but it is far too much a star's game, and much less a team game, than prior.
The NBA just as MLB with it's blind eye to steroids, and in building bandboxes years ago, catered to the ESPN highlight, and thus whored the game, forever altering it to the ADD generations. At least this year MLB is experiencing a pitcher's renaissance..NBA is still a whored-out walk-a-thon, protect the stars at all costs, where hard playoff fouls equal ejection, joke.
I don't know how Coach Wooden could hang in there so long this past fifteen years..he must have quit watching games and read more?

Everyone in the NBA can get away with that call; it's not just the superstars.

You get 2 steps and a hop whether its a bunny hop, a jump for a dunk its all legal.
Because 2 steps and a hop is as blatant a travel as it gets and would actually get called.

If current NBA players were transported in time and officiated by 1950s refs, they would be called for traveling at least 10 times per game. Go look at some old film.

Yeah that should've been a travel because he didnt land on two feet. If he wouldve landed on both feet, it wouldve been ok.
But thats different from taking 2 steps AND a hop step. Thats the equivalent of 4 steps since the hop step is 'technically' supposed to equal 2 steps
