Don't forget the '81 strike in which the Reds had the best record in baseball(on pace for 99 wins in a 162 game season) and didn't even make the playoffs.

He was the 26th overall pick. Also, Petty is an 18 year old pitcher who was in rookie ball last year. For a pitcher of Gray's caliber who's on a team friendly contract with multiple years remaining on his deal, it's a terrible return.

I think the Expos win that one

The Reds pushed chips in though for the 2020 year and we know what happened. I’m of the opinion they wouldn’t have been that good anyway but it’s still unfortunate.
