I get that. Another reality is that Cards fans have to look at deals like these through the lens of a mid/small market club. Heyward just isnt worth what he is getting paid. You dont pay light hitting RF's with world class defense $25ish million a year.
Offensively, it's hard to justify the contract. But in all other phases of the game, he's been extremely good.

Any team with even decent payroll would take Heyward in a heartbeat.

Sorry your team's poor? And apparently old according to Heyward.

Agree with you. The Cubs have the payroll to overcome his lack of offense in other areas. Its a different factor for small market teams. 25 million... he needs to be a middle of the oreder type of player that helps carry the team.

Who cares. No one would agree with him. Hell he might not say it here but he would take Piscotty over Heyward on the Cubs every day and twice on Sunday.

Nah, we just got lucky he picked the Cubs.
Cards would be in serious trouble if we were paying a guy 25m to be useless at the plate.
Team would be significantly worse, both now and the future.
Not sure how you don't understand the difference in teams, the Cardinals need bats.

Just think how much better we would be if Heyward put up numbers like last year.

quote:See, I don't agree with your logic. It's not about the payroll. The Cubs have the players to overcome Heyward's down offensive year. Look at their lineup...Heyward and Zobrist are the only free agents. Everyone else is homegrown and team-friendly.

At $25M, you want him to be around what he was offensively with the Cardinals last year and maintaining his defense, baserunning, on-base skills, etc. He's done everything but produce well at the plate. That's a big part of earning that money, but like I said he isn't sandbagging it and he's been excellent throughout the other phases of his game.
I want to stop short of homering because he's a Cub, but I believe in what they did with Heyward and I don't think his down year is going to be the way he goes out as a Cub. He's got years left and he is trying to fix it daily.

By the way, Heyward only gets 8.8 mil this year.
(And St. Louis' total salary is 4 mil higher than Chicago's)
Lester, Fowler, Montero, and Hammel all get more this year than Heyward.
EDIT: All of this according to ESPN.

Heh, for all that money he is getting, he'd better be doing more that winning a Gold Glove. Wasn't he a 7 WAR player last year?
Quite humorous any Cubs fans would bring up "moral victories" after all the antics they pull.
