Obviously the inference is didn't want him enough to top or match the pads offer (considering we dI'd make him an offer aMD pursued hI'm significantly). So why would they want him on that deal now including giving up players and picking up the expensive years?

Because they have a legitimate shot at the playoffs and need someone to pair with Lester, Hammel, and Arrieta. Shields during the month of July has a 2.25 ERA (6 starts) so he is pitching MUCH better as well.
Padres are more than likely willing to eat a part of the deal in order to get out from under the deal and it isn't like the Cubs would be giving up Bryant or a prospect close to the majors.

Oh man. Hate to lose Baez. Dude oozes raw talent.

If it gets us two years of Ross and Kimbrel..I''ll be on board.

Man, Lester looking sharp so far. K'd 5 of 1st 6

Eh. That doesn't sell me. Go get a #5 and just spend money in the off season wiyh that great fa class. Or get someone young and controlled if you're giving up players. Also are the padres really likely to eat any significant amount of that contract?

Basically I just don't agree with you that they should get him and am fairly confident they won't get him.

i love the trade deadline.

Also, I would stab myself if I was a Rockies fan. Terrible ownership, perrennially in last place, no hope, two best players will be gone etc.... At least Coors Field is awesome.

That would cost more than Shields and need longer contracts? Zimmerman is the only pitcher I think they have a shot with and you are looking at 22+ million a year over at least 6 or 7.

Yep. Sounds better to me.

Isn't sheilds 34 years old already? Signed for 4 more years? Why am I supposed to be jumping at the hope to trade for that and pay him 21 million the next 3 years?

7 K for Lester so far. He's on fire.

The Cubs need to break this game open.

Because you wouldn't be paying him 21 million a years... #1 as I've stated a few times already and you continue to ignore, the Padres are more than likely going to eat salary. Cubs probably pay on average 17m a year for 3 more years.

I'm not ignoring it. I just don't thinkbased on the pads market and history that's it's any where near as significant as you're speculating it is.

I've also not seen a figure about how much they will eat.

Either way I'm glad we are talking to the pads about ross. Not sheilds. If you think that's folly that's fine. I think sheilds isn't a realistic option for the cubs and I'm pleased with that. Could've gotten the same deal without trading a single player and had him for the first half of the season.

Atta boy rizzo.
