I really disagree with this. Dempsey is a sniper for sure, I'm not contesting that; but to put him up top (which he has done on occasion) completely shuts down the midfield wings. There's no one on the US roster that can play the outside mid with the pace and potential scoring threat that Dempsey possesses. Now Dempsey doesn't really like to get back and play D (and has a nasty habit of disappearing during games), but for my money he's the deadliest winger we've got. We don't really gain that much by putting him up top, but we lose the midfield battle in the process.

shite, Dempsey has been tearing up the EPL as a forward with Zamora out.
Holden is great on the right wing. He has the best cross on the team (sorry Spector).

the simple fact is that we misuse 50% of our roster because Bradley is a clown. We play horribly unattractive soccer and the really solid talent that we do have, is misused.
Until we rid ourselves of American coaching, it won't change.
It still gives me a headache thinking about what we're wasting in not using Torres more.

Dempsey getting back on D is a pretty big problem. several goals have been the result of a disconnect btwn back line and Dempsey/Bradley playing out of position/not getting back. I like Dempsey up top with Davies (yes, even with Altidore). Holden can certainly play out on the wing.

IMHO i think that Altidore needs to be up top (ideally with Davies, but Dempsey is a good proxy). That combo of Altidore's size and strength combined with Davies/Dempsey's speed, pace and nose for the goal is a lot for defenders to deal with. Try to out muscle davies/dempsey...the ball gets slotted to ALtidore. Double-up Altidore and a streaking dempsey/davies creates havoc. I don't really like having two burners up top; I think having a burner and a target man is the way to go for the USMNT.

I was just kidding. I would have a hard time pulling for any team that included Blanco's fat dirty arse.

Talent-wise and form-wise over the last year, I would go this way.
If Davies is in fact healthy, which I will not get my hopes up for yet, I slot him in for Holden, then swap with Dempsey (sometimes). Both Stu and CD9 can be late game changer/supersubs
That said, I want to see Benny, I want to see Edu, I want to see Jones, and I want to see DeMerit get good time.
And yes, I know that Castillo won't play left back. But he should. He's damn good.

That line-up could beat England. I just think Bradley is going to play Clark.

GK:Howard
Def:Spector Gooch DeMerit Bocanegra
Mids: Bradley
Holden Torres
Donovan
Forwards: Davies(Ideally) Altidore
Dempsey (sub) Eddie Johnson(sub)
Disclaimer: Eddie Johnson is only included if he isn't a headcase and can actually score; instead of his usual missing golden opportunities.

i like dempsey as much as the next guy, but hold the frick up.
i don't care what anyone says, landon donovan is still the United States' best player.

I wouldn't mind seeing him play prior to the WC. He was always a headcase, but I wouldn't mind giving him a shot in a throwaway game. But im not counting on him being a superstar or anything.

Landon has looked very average in England again. He's great in the link-up, and he has loads of pace. But ANYTIME he takes on a physical defender, he loses the ball. He VANISHED in the MLS Cup, and he's struggled in the EPL when taking on defenders. If I have to have the ball at an American's feet, it's gonna be:
Dempsey
Torres
Donovan
In that order.
Dempsey
Torres
Donovan
In that order.

I think he plays Clark too, which is sad, b/c Clark is probably the worst central mid that will go.
Bradley, Edu, Jones, Clark, Feilheiber (only four of those will go I assume, although Benny can technically play wing)

everyone has a phenomenal boner for torres and i like the way he plays as well. but id rather have the person with the ball actually be on the field, instead of watching from the sidelines. don't blame me for saying that, blame big bob.
as for dempsey, id also like the person with the ball to pass it every now and then. donovan is a fricking stud, and he will be our country's best player when the whole world is watching come june, and i have no doubt in saying that.

I'll agree to that

I'm saying this based strictly on his streak of form with Fulham before his injury, but he was playing out of his mind. Like, actually sharing the ball, holding possession, winning the ball in the air and on the floor, connecting on quick link ups, making great runs, and being on the right end of some wonder strikes.
Donovan, since the first half of Brazil, has been essentially invisible. I don't trust Landon, I'm sorry. I think the whole Beckham fiasco has gotten totally in his head, and while he's not playing badly for Everton, he's not really doing anything (other than one beautiful corner)

i should also include that i don't really watch these guys play outside of the national team. i read shite about them and that's about it. so, i really don't know as much about these guy's current form like you do.
however, i do know that regardless of how ignorant it sounds, that really doesn't change my opinion. i feel that strongly about donovan playing for the national team.
i feel like there are 2 players that not playing in the world cup would totally prevent the US from success in South Africa. they are Landon Donovan and Oguchi Onyewu. dunno whether to classify Timmy here or not.

See, I can agree with your Donovan points. He is the best outfield player in USMNT history, arguably, so honestly, were I not so high on Dempsey's play the last 4 months, I would agree.
Gooch, however, scares me. Really really concerns me. Since he left Liege, he has been DREADFUL. Before his injury, Gooch had a terrible run of form with Milan and on the pitch for the US. The game he got injured in (Costa Rica, IIRC) was his worst performance. I think the US can survive without him. DeMerit is good, Bocanegra is good, even Goodson has been strong lately. Edu is capable at CB as well.
Now, do I believe that Gooch on top of his game is our best CB? Absolutely. He's world class on his day, hence why he was signed by Milan. But that run of form before his injury, plus the fact that I don't see him getting one minute with Milan chasing Inter, makes me think twice about how much faith I'll put in him.

One thing to keep in mind, too. For most of our main guys, this is their best/last chance to shine in the WC.
Donovan is 27
Howard is 30
Gooch is 27
Bocanegra is 30
Dempsey is 26
I expect Donovan and Dempsey to have huge WCs.
I'm a little worried about Bocanegra and even Howard, lately.
