Exactly. Despite a couple of questionable calls, it shouldn't have ever come to that. Cal's offense went into a shell and was very conservative. Their defense stayed on the field way too long and depended on them way too much. Miami was slowly chipping away and Cal never delivered the knockout punch. Had a chance to make a statement under the bright lights and the coaching staff and players choked.

I think most star players are intelligent enough to not drop bombs on national TV

It's targeting because of the way Miamis player launched at Cals QB. Lead with the crown of the helmet, he couldn't see what he was hitting. It's ok to be wrong, just know that Miami has won back to back weeks because of the refs.

I could see Miami coming back and winning this with a field goal

Despite a couple of questionable calls,
The non call on the targeting was nowhere near questionable and if called correctly the game is over b/c Cal would have been kneeing it out. The Miami o-lineman being in the endzone before Ward threw the final TD was not a questionable call and if that call is made Miami is pushed back to the 10 and it's 2nd and goal w/just 26 seconds left.
It's completely disingenuous to act like the refs didn't hand this game to Miami on a silver platter.

Head to head is a single data point that matters, but not so much that it cannot be overridden by an entire body of work.

I just want to point out that yesterday was an amazing slate of games. I fricking love college football.
