The question was "when did this come close to happening?"
2009. That's close.

Closest, but not close (to your scenario)
PAC-12 champ had 3 losses, Big 10 champ had two losses, ACC champ had two losses. Notre Dame was 6-6.

The NFL has no problem putting conference champions in. Win your conference and you have nothing to worry about.
By that logic they should've crowned the pats but luckily the Giants won their conference.

There was only 3 major conference champions that were undefeated one of which was EXTREMELY questionable with regards to its major distinction-Big East Cincinnati.
ETA I see that was covered in a previous post.
Also 3 is not close to 6. 3 would also be covered in a 4 team play off. And No i dont give a shite if a little 5 conference team goes undefeated and gets left out.

Amen. I hate the idea of 8. I wish every conference would simply have the same format for determining it's champion And keep the 4. Wouldn't mind a bcs like system determining those 4 though.

3 is half of 6 and fits squarely into a 4 team playoff. And frankly that 3rd team shouldn't count.
There is no need to expand the playoff. There has been and never will be more than four deserving claimants to the best team in the country.

Right.
So you make it through the SEC schedule, win the conference title, and then all you have to do is win an additional 3 games for the NC? Nah

The system we have now can work the same way if we went to an 8 team playoff. The committee can rearrange the final rankings in order for the seedings to create the best match-ups in each bowl.
Bowls:
Sugar
Orange
Cotton
Fiesta
Rose
Peach (bring it back)
Rotate all 6 bowls around each year so 4 of these bowls will be quarterfinals, 2 will be semis, and there can be a final natty at a predetermined location. It's fair to say that a 1 or even 2 loss conference champ in the Power 5 should get into the playoff. a 2 loss conference champ should be obviously be lower in the rankings. 2 of the other slots can be for the 2 highest ranked Power 5 teams and 1 slot for a D1 team not in the power 5. That team MUST finish ranked in the Top 8 otherwise that slot goes to the 3rd highest ranked non-conference champ team in the top 8.
As for the Non-Power 5 team that may make it in, you have to award it to the team that has beaten more ranked opponents. For example: An undefeated Northern Illinois team falls below an 11-1 Memphis that beat #15 Ole Miss.
I'm done.

6 is the right number. Get rid of this useless fricking committee, every conference has a championship, go back to the BCS rankings, the top 6 teams after championship weekend go to the playoffs.

I didn't say anyone was, but they should have been.

I can't imagine the bitching that would happen about playing an extra game if #2 and #3 were really tight.
