re: Can someone explain to me why NFL teams are so interested in Cam Newton?

I big time question his accuracy. I don't remember anyone commenting on Newton's pin-point accurate passing while he was at Auburn. And as someone else here pointed out, he was throwing to wide open guys because the defense was so concerned he was gonna take off and run.
As someone said (I believe Troy Aikman), everyone is open in college, nobody's open in the pros. No way I see Newton being able to fit the ball into the tight coverages in the NFL.
And his running ability in the pros will be based on his ability to move around in the pocket, not his ability to run out of it.

He's big
So was JaMarcus

JaMarcus had a bigger one.

JaMarcus was more accurate coming from a far more pro style offense and proved himself longer.
There is no reason why Newton should be a first round pick, but some future unemployed GM will snag him up.

anywhere long enough to show he has any decent off-season work ethic
Seeing newton 12 months ago during spring practice and where he was 8 months later was nothing short of remarkable..... the "work ethic" he showed to get there is extremely impressive, IMO.
I'm not even sure if Cam's a 1st rounder, but I'm betting he'll be successful... but if he's not, it won't be b/c of work ethic.

You know, that's amazing insight there GCA. We should have realized that because 1 black SEC Qb, with a big arm tanked, that all of them will.

FWIW Vy went to some pro bowls and won ROY. cam has a long way to go to be as good as VY. And that's sad

Was just saying
Newton needs to sit at least 2, maybe 3 seasons. He didn't take a single snap under center in his college career, was in a very unique offense that was founded on his power running ability and the counterforce of smaller speedier backs. They don't run powerspread sets in the NFL featuring playaction passes and zone reads/QB counters. Ask Vince Young how much being big and athletic and running a zone read spread option prepared him to stand in the pocket and learn how to pass in the NFL. If he isn't crying or being a general wuss, he'll tell it didn't do jackshit for him.

Forgive the comparision but IMO he will start off like Tebow. He won't start right away but will start to get some reps as the season goes along. Beyond that...meh we'll see.
