re: Can someone explain how or why the Dodgers traded Yordan Alvarez for a reliever?

He’s so bad at first apparently. I’m guessing he would have been a 2020 debut with the Dodgers and the universal Covid DH. So you would have 21 to put him somewhere and hope he doesn’t die with the DH coming the next year.
But in a world where he stayed and blew up as a prospect like he did for us, it’s hard to imagine the Dodgers not cashing him in later. shite he might be on the Red Sox in the Mookie trade. And one of him or Shohei would have to play the field if he did stay

Stros also let young Curt Schilling and Kenny Lofton go for basically nothing. It happens a ton when you have a good front office constantly unearthing talent.
I always have a soft spot for the stars who just appear out of nowhere on a non traditional development curve

Some teams are better than others at excavating that talent from the heap. Dodgers and Astros lead the way, imo.

And is actually a decent outfielder for his size has a good arm

Why'd the Twins DFA David Ortiz? Why did the White sox trade Fernando Tatis Jr for James Shields? It happens, teams trade prospects and players before they know what they're going to turn into.

I understand and those are good examples. The Dodgers scouting system usually is better about hanging onto their studs than most teams though.
Just wanted to discuss it more because I walked away from this season highly impressed with Yordan. He never seems off balance.

Yup, Cole Ragans for Aroldis. At least it paid off I guess.

The O's thought it would be a great idea to trade pitchers Curt Schilling, Pete Harnisch and outfielder Steve Finley to the Houston Astros for first baseman Glenn Davis in 1991.
To be fair, the Astros got Schilling in a hell of a steal themselves.
