Can someone explain how or why the Dodgers traded Yordan Alvarez for a reliever?

Astros committed forcible rape upon LA in this one.
Fields is out of baseball. Yordan is a premier hitter and has plate coverage like nobody I’ve ever seen.
Why did the Dodgers give up on him so quickly?

Well he was 19 years old at the time before the roids or cheating stuff.

He was like 19 and hadn’t played a game in the US. He wasn’t some huge hyped prospect. Once he came stateside he destroyed everything in sight and rocketed through the system. It was a tremendous scouting job by the Astros FO who supposedly picked him from a list of complex guys the Dodgers were willing to deal for Fields if I remember the story right

He was rookie of the year for the Astros as soon as he got to the bigs.
Typically the LAD are the organization stockpiling ROTY prospects. Usually they hang onto those guys.
Odd that they cut him loose so soon. He murdered Rangers pitching this postseason, but I’m genuinely intrigued by this dude. He’s like a more polished and patient Papi.

you could do this thread for dozens of players. you never know how a player will turn out.

He hadn’t really even debuted stateside yet and they thought Josh fields could help them during a playoff run

The Astros wanted to sign him as soon as he got off the boat but there was some bullshite with a penalty concerning a contract issue with the elder Gurriel brother so the FO passed and the Dodgers signed him.

Wow, didn't realize that Josh Fields was the one that was traded. Josh Fields costed the Mariners Mike Trout as well.
Jack Zduriencik took over as the Mariners GM in 2008. The previous GM spent the #20 overall pick in the draft on Josh Fields, which most people thought was a terrible pick. The general consensus was that Zduriencik wouldn't sign him and take the #21 pick in the 2009 draft. They ended up signing him last minute and forfeited that #21 pick in the 2009 draft. Trout went #25 overall and the Mariners were strongly considering taking him #2 overall, but went with the "safer" pick in Dustin Ackley.

Astros didn’t have the international pool money that year to afford Alvarez.
Dodgers also bought O’Neil Cruz during the same year and traded him for Tony Watson. Another relief pitcher

I didn’t know that. Their scouting department should be studied for science.

To go along what was known was that he was going to be a DH and back in 2017, there still wasnt clarity on the future of the DH in the NL
So he had never played in the US, had a profile that we didnt know if we could even use, and the team needed some bullpen help

Astros traded for him before he even played in the minors. Lunhow had an elite latin america scouting team, just look up and down the roster. They really wanted Yordan but didn't have the international money to sign him at the time.
They made the trade ASAP. Giving up a serviceable reliever for an unknown prospect happens all the time.
Fields wasn't terrible for the dodgers. Sub 1.0 Whip in 16/17 with a 2.84/2.20 era. However, he will always be remembered for giving up back to back homers by Altuve and Correa in the 10th inning of game 2 of the world series

That makes sense as well.
Yordan and Freeman in the same lineup haha holy hell.

Yep. This was also before batted ball data was being widely measured even at the complex level - Yordan’s is obviously superb but who knows many data points they had on that at the time

Baw, we got Adolis for $70 and a pack of gum from the Cards.
Some guys are late bloomers, others, like a later round draft pick or lesser hyped international players will sometimes have a moment where it ‘clicks’ and they turn into a franchise player.
The randomness of it all entertains me.

Interesting what if story
Figure if we waited to see the batting, we probably would have rushed him through as a 1st baseman, or hide him out in like right, just to get the bat to play in a NL with no DH but I wonder how that would have gone on his knees

there is not a team in the MLB that doesn't have a "damn we traded that guy for this bum"
Red Sox traded Jeff Bagwell
Astros Traded Joe Morgan
Johan Santana was rule 5'ed from the astros to the Marlins, who later traded him to the twins for Jared Camp and cash.
