All self induced. Piss poor fan engagement and fan recruitment by our athletic department. It’s been an issue for 30 years.
The lone exception being the early Hudspeth years.

For the past five or so years we’ve told the Greek student population they aren’t welcome at Cajun Field. Even during the Baldwin & Bustle years they’d show up when the student attendance overall was suffering.
Our brilliant administration has recently treated them like lepers.

Wrong. LSU fans, not ones from Acadiana area that never set foot on campus, couldn't give 2 shits about other in state schools other than Tulane. I'm from Lafayette and graduated from both LSU and USL (grad school). The Cajun games are just boing b/c of the teams they play. If you grew up going to LSU games, even though you didn't attend LSU, the games at Tiger Stadium were electric. Cajun Field can't replicate that atmosphere, it's as simple as that. It is a little like attending a game at Wrigley Field, then the next day you go to Guaranteed Rate Field (SOX) and get a serious case of letdown. The best games at Cajun Field were always McNeese and LA Tech. Once a decade they'll get a team to come in that generates some interest (OK State/BAMA/A&M/K State). It is what it is.

I remember when tiger stadium had about 30k fans just a few years ago. Not sure why you lsu blowhards have to crap on other state schools for trying to improve their situation

Because they hate when other programs try to improve, or actually have success.
It’s always “you’ll never be LSU” or “know your place”. The thing is every in-state program already knows this. We don’t get $60M from our conference, we don’t get the media hype. But god forbid UL be successful and build a modern stadium that fits the program. Final total seating capacity when everything is complete will be 34,000ish.
Of course that won’t replicate Tiger Stadium, that’s a ridiculous statement. That doesn’t mean we can’t be a great atmosphere in our own right.

A stadium doesn’t create the atmosphere, fans do.
Y’all need to fix tailgating. That’s how you will fix the attendance problem. Seriously, the tailgating y’all have is down right pathetic. Cue blaming the admin and parking.
