NFL went mainstream in the late '60s and people are just recently catching on to the long-term effects of that sport.

That's what I was thinking about with this, as well.

that's a fair point but when most older boxers (who are still fighting) can't speak clearly I think it's reasonable to infer they are taking more brain damage over their careers
Oh, it's definitely a reasonable conclusion. We just don't know for sure.

I actually started a thread a couple of months ago where I wondered whether the NFL would suffer the same fate as boxing where the best, brightest, and most gifted athletes will look at the condition of the older NFL stars and decide that there are safer ways to profit off of their talents.

It's definitely a concern that I think boxing has taken steps to address: Less rounds, referees are much quicker to stop fights when a boxer gets in trouble, etc.

Interesting but I doubt it changes what sport young guys decide to pursue

If it was just about money, longevity, and safety all the poor kids interested in football would be more interested in baseball

I don't think many consider the price they are paying until they start to pay it... IMO young people are less interested in boxing because it is harder to see the great fighters fight and because the sport has major corruption issues

According to BusinessWeek LINK

Manny Pacquiao (No. 72)
Emelianenko (No. 82)
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (No. 91)
Lesnar No. 96

It doesn't tell you there earnings but do you honestly think its even 20% of Floyd or Pacman

Yes.

Now take Floyd, Manny, Hatton, out of the boxing world and who makes more than any guy that's headlined an MMA PPV in the last 2-3 years?

Again Boxing payouts for big fights without any of the above guys get good money, but the under cards are unwatchable and making less than 10k.

Also look at the trends. MMA ppv buys get bigger and bigger every year. Boxing not so much. Take away Mike Tyson and you lose 4 of the top five boxing PPVs. Take away Oscar and you lose number 1 and 6. The top grossing boxing ppv guys aren't fighting anymore.

for MMA

In 20 PPV events, the promotion has topped the 600,000 buy mark ten times, three of which garnered over one million buys (UFC 91, 92, and 100). In the 20 previous PPV events, UFC 58 to UFC 79, the promotion has six top the 600,000 buy mark and one (UFC 66) surpass one million buys. Prior to UFC 60 (the first to break 600,000 buys) the UFC had not had an event go over 500,000.

In 2008, five of 12 events bested 600,000 buys.

Through eight PPV’s in 2009, five have gone over 600,000 buys.

The greatest thing I have watched was Pride. It could get you really pumped up before a fight with the amazing entrances plus the rules and judging were better. They judged on who they think won the fight not the point system. Also they didn't try to market their guys as badasses.

I won't hate on anybody else's opinion, but MMA doesn't feel like a "sport" to me, no matter how many times I try to watch it. It simply feels barbaric and trashy

I boxed and wrestled growing up, so you might think I'd enjoy MMA as a natural extension, but I just don't

They ae2 ifferent sports.

However, I like boxing much better. I dont like all the hugging and kissing that goes on in MMA.

I also like the endurance race of boxing vs the tap-outs of MMA. I like the knockouts in both.

+1

Watch Dream

MMA could make itself so much better if they got away from the Boxing scoring system. It's come far enough as a separate sport now. Make this happen.

Ring >> Cage. IMO.

Nothing's worse than 3 minutes of pressed up against the cage.

Edit... except maybe 3 rounds of feeling each other out with jabs (boxing or mma)

You really think Fedor has made even 20% as much as Flyod and Pacman have

The most popular fighters in MMA are WWF guys Shamrock and Lesnar. Couture and Liddell are the only other guys real popular to the average sports fan. And Mayweather has probable made more money in his last 3 fights then all 4 of them combined.

The whole PPV buys thing is just a small part of the story because if MMA was really more popular then why don't they get paid even half as much?

I watch MMA its cool but I don't understand all the hype.

I'm sure his huge chunk of M-1 global which is putting shows on both network TV and PPV are really nothing. That CBS prime time fight couldn't possibly have paid well

For 99.9% of the fighter in the sport MMA pay >>>>> boxing pay.

And who makes more year in and year out. Zuffa or Top Rank? Dana White or Don king?

MMA is on cable TV just about every night of the week. Boxing is on tv when exactly? Telemundo?

In 2010 both suck.

MMA has always sucked.
Boxing used to be good but no longer is.

I can promise you if you take that graph out, it gets worse for boxing and better for MMA.

Actually on Fox Sports tonight.

Bellator Fighting Championships 14.

MAIN CARD
Shad Lierley vs. Wilson Reis (featherweight tourney first round)
Ben Askren vs. Ryan Thomas (welterweight tourney first round)
Toby Imada vs. James Krause (lightweight tourney first round)
Pat Curran vs. Mike Ricci (lightweight tourney first round)

8 guys you've never heard of making much more than 8 boxers you've never heard of.

I'm not gonna dispute that MMA is more popular now but I can show you a graph showing that more people have googled Miley Cyrus than Frank Sinatra. Doesn't say anything about whose music is better.
