and for the people who dont like MMA fights go and watch Chuck Liddel vs Wanderlai Silva and then come back and post
That fight was so great because all they did was box, no one wants to see takedowns. Same goes for Bonner vs Griffin that was a boxing match.
Boxing is still WAAAAY more popular evidence by the fact that Mayeather and Mosley will each make about 10x as much money in there next fight as Anderson Silva and Chuck Liddel have made in there entire career.

that doesn't show it's more popular
# of PPV buys shows how many people valued buying the PPV
i know boxing is ahead, but it's not THAT far ahead. not 100 years worth of popularity ahead

So despite that fact that the rest of the card will make crap while the entire UFC payout will be more means it's a better sport?

I was raised on boxing by a former professional boxer. Other kids idolized football and baseball players. All my heroes were boxers. Marvin Hagler is still my favorite athlete of all time.
All that said, the newer breed of boxer doesn't interest me. There are less and less "fighters" coming up. I think it was less the sport than the mentality of the men that I looked up to.
I prefer mma today because there are more fighters. Stylistic differences can be very dramatic and are more interesting. Most of the best fighters are in one org, and that org puts together fights that I want to see. Knees: only in mma. Everyone in mma has holes. It is near impossible to be elite everywhere a fight can take place.

What are you talking about? Mayweather will make more in 1 fight against Mosley then Liddell GSP and Silva combined have made in there careers.
No one grows up aspiring to be a MMA fighter who is making pennies compared to any top 10 boxer. MMA=wrestlers and guys who failed at other sports. Some of the brazilian guys are legit but still very few top athletes in MMA.

How about Matt Hughes vs Frank Trigg the second time they fought??? It is considered the best MMA fight by quite a few people including myself.

Boxing because the vast majority of MMA fans are the biggest d-bags on the planet.

I wonder how many MMA fighters would be boxers if the boxing federations had their shite together...

some... but there's a real contingent of MMA fans who find it more interesting
I consider myself a casual fan of both sports. When I first saw MMA I was repulsed but couldn't stop watching... esp the early octogon stuff
But the more I see the more I think boxing is the more brutal sport... it's hard not to look at old boxers and notice how pathetic their brain function is now
Overall I think it's more brutal to take 100 plus punches to the head per fight with padded gloves than it is to occasionally get knocked out wtih a kick, knee or punch... the fights are shorter and more intense in MMA whereas in boxing they work out to be custom made to cause cumulative brain damage

Well, the counting to 10 when a fighter is down and then letting him back up to fight with a concussion is the problem with boxing. It is much more dangerous then having a ref pull the guy off of you and the fight is over.

How many old MMA guys are there?

People were tuxedos to boxing matches and affliction shirts to MMA matches. Advantage: Boxing.

One of the first things I thought about when I was idly wondering about this
but there are some now... the original octogon stuff was 15 plus years ago (just for MMA Americans know)
MMA probably really is less likely to result in as much brain damage at the end of a career... compare the average 40 year old boxer with the average 40 year old MMA fighter
Seems like pretty much every boxer who fights too long ends up with Evander Holyfield disease... guys like Shamrock who fight too long just embarrass themselves because they can no longer compete

Boxing hit the mainstream around the turn of the century w/ John L. Sullivan, Jim Corbett, etc. and the general public didn't really get wise to the effects until Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson suffered from dementia later in their lives.
NFL went mainstream in the late '60s and people are just recently catching on to the long-term effects of that sport.
Either way, this issue doesn't affect how likely I am to watch the sport. Athletes understand the risks and they are paid handsomely for subjecting themselves to the risk. Their risks don't hinder or enhance the entertainment value of their respective sports. If that was the case I'd choose soccer over football.

that's a fair point but when most older boxers (who are still fighting) can't speak clearly I think it's reasonable to infer they are taking more brain damage over their careers
not to say pretty much any contact sport with shots to the head can't cause some brain damage... hell even soccer does with heading
