Deion Sanders’s decision to leave Jackson State for Colorado raised eyebrows in the sports world and sparked debates on whether or not the move was ethical. Sanders always had spoken with pride about strengthening HBCUs, but his decision to take a Power 5 job after just two seasons with the Tigers has left many to criticize the move—including ESPN’s Bomani Jones.

“I wouldn’t have come in the first place and say that God sent me here to fix HBCUs and God decided in the middle of it you were supposed to leave,” Jones said. “The thing I’ve said is maybe God wants 10% of five mil and not 10% of 375 [hundred thousand dollars]. If God can do math, I can understand why it is. He sold a dream and then walked out on the dream. People have the right to be critical of that.”

“He did a lot of good work while he was at Jackson State,” Jones said. “But all the bigger grandiose notions of what he was doing for somebody else—nah it was what it always is: He did it for Deion.”

If you listen to what he’s saying, it’s actually fair. I don’t like Bomani Jones, btw.

Can't imagine why he'd want to GTFO of JSU when his office gets broken into during games

I don’t know why we care what Bomani Jones thinks but that’s not one of his unreasonable takes

He’s less annoyed with him leaving as much as preceding it with the holier than thou attitude and always making it all about himself (which is what Prime does)

I hate Bomani Jones with every fiber of my being, but he is *sort of* right. Deion sold his job at JSU as being like a quest from God and fixing HBCUs...

And then left as soon as he possibly could.

As he should, he should move up to better jobs. But he probably will get some criticism with the way he framed things.

Deion has been helping JSU. Unfortunately, a lot of people in and around JSU have been helping themselves to Deion’s shite.

I dont fault deion for his decision and would do the same in his shoes but i dont disagree with bomani at the surface of what hes saying. Accepting that job is counter to what he said coming in.

From what I'm hearing, The school was taking football money and using it how theh see fit. He has to pay a lot of money out of his own pocket

exactly. i think if deion hadnt said everything he did coming in people wouldnt have cared.

add to that his "it's either move on or get moved out" (paraphrasing) comment to his team and it makes it seem even more silly. No way jackson st was ever gonna fire him barring some sort of huge scandal. Just come out and say I tried but people around here dont truly want what im trying to bring, or something

Black People: WE NEED MORE BLACK HEAD COACHES AT POWER 5 SCHOOLS

Black Coach: I am taking the head coaching job at a Power Five School, I valued my time at "directional mid-major HBCU".

Black People: What a selfish Uncle Tom

Just my two cents, black people critisizing Deon Sanders wouldn't give two shits if he left a small directional school in a mid major conference.

Anyone who thought Deion was hanging around Jackson one more minute than he had to was deluding themselves.
Deion is about Deion first and second, and that's how it's always been.

generally speaking yes. but he's not really doing that here i think. I think what he's criticizing is fair. now why hes doing that may be a different story but still.
