Pretty much proves the point. When they went outside of the B1G they got beat.

So did Alabama when they went outside the SEC in the 60s and 70s. Couldn't beat USC, Notre Dame, Texas.

What was their big win out of Conference under Bryant -Penn State?

Bryant won 7 Sugar bowls (SEC version of the Rose) at Alabama including dragging his nuts all over Woody Hayes in one of them. Bryant had no problem beating USC, Penn State, Nebraska, etc it was ND and Texas he couldn't beat and those games were close he wasn't blown out in any of them. Michigan would get to the Rose Bowl and score 6 points against a #15 Stanford or Washington

Bo's big ten record and Ohio State's from the early 70s to mid 80s was based on the fact that they were the only two schools in the big ten who spent money on football in the 70s and up until the mid 80s.

when Duffy Daugherty at Michigan State retired because he wasn't given the same resources that UM and Ohio State were getting it led to the Big 2 and Little 8 era of the big ten.

When Iowa, Michigan State, and Wisconsin beginning in the mid 80s and early 90s stated to put resources and hire decent coaches like Hayden Fry, George Perles, and Barry Alveraz the Michigan dominance ended. Bo retired in 1989 because he couldn't compete against other programs like Michigan State, Iowa, and Wisconsin. He couldn't rely on an advantage based on money only. He could handle having only Ohio State as a well-funded rival, but when other big ten schools woke-up it was the end for him.

Defeats by Michigan State in 1984 and 1987 and other programs in the late 80s led him to quit. He knew he couldn't complete against well-funded programs. His bowl record is proof of that.
