Making ten Rose Bowls and 1 Orange Bowl in his era was a big deal and remember the national championship was mythical. He also benefitted from a big ten in which the other 8 schools did not put the resources toward football that Michigan and Ohio State did.
When Iowa and Michigan State started to get serious about football his record tapered off. Check his record in the late 80s and early 90s. He built his record in the perverse big 2 and little 8 era.

Larry Coker and Gene Chizik both won NCs. I guess by your logic they're better coaches than Bo.

He retired in '89.
But yes, that was the Big 2, Little 8 era.

I was always puzzled about that too.

Just because there was no official playoff for the thing doesn't mean it was mythical. It existed. There were two or three major organizations that all the schools wanted to be awarded that trophy from.
When you watch the broadcasts for those nationally televised games that were relevant, the broadcasters talk quite a bit about that particular game's national title implications.

Bo Schembechler never won a National Championship and was 5-12 in bowl games
Piggy backs off the tradition established at Michigan under Fielding Yost with all the championships not to mention what Michigan did in the 30s and 40s, didn't hurt him that he coached a ton of future NFL stars and HOFers as well

I think it’s because Michigan fans see him as the guy who played for Woody Hayes at Miami Oh and then coached for Woody at Ohio St. They love the fact Bo left both Woody and Ohio St and came to Michigan and ultimately beat Woody. They don’t care about anything else other than he chose “them”. Makes them feel good. The ultimate reality of Michigan football is that if not for the state of Ohio, Michigan would be nothing. They got all of their prominent players and coaches from Ohio. They love that little fact to be kept secret. That doesn’t happen anymore.

Bo schembechler rebuilt the program
It was a flaming pile of trash in the late 50s, early 60s

Michigan gets a lot of credit for being a blue blood and they have no credible hardware to show for it

Why is Michigan looked at like a juggernaut historically when they’ve won only two national championships in the poll era

It's difficult to ignore a team that has won more football games than any other program.

There is a lot more to being a blue blood than recent titles and trophies.
A team can be arse for 10+ years and still be a blue blood. tennessee is a blue blood. nebraska is a blue blood. boise state is not. oregon is not. utah is not.
A blue blood, imo, is defined as a program with a major presence (measured by various things such as revenue, recruiting, wins, conference titles, national titles, size of fan base etc) in college football whose reputation and history recruits itself.

I think Tennessee is absolutely a blue blood

Lol If you say so....if that’s the case then Michigan St and Minnesota are blue bloods because they both have more championships than Tennessee. Tennessee is NOT a blue blood.

UW hired John Coatta over Bo in '67.
Not a big fan of Bo, but that was a poor choice.

Plenty of Goof fans seem to think they are.
